Tsurutsuru Onsen in Hinode Tokyo is family friendly, and tattoos are OK. Tsurutsuru is located near Mt. Mitake and Mt. Hinode which are wonderful hiking areas. We did not hike this trip but did try indigo dying in Ome and visited the Ome Railway Park before ending our day with a soak in the Tsurutsuru Onsen. It is a petite onsen but perfect for an end of adventure visit. Tsurutsuru means silky smooth in Japanese, and we found it did make our skin tsurutsuru. This natural onsen pulls volcanic water from 1,500 meters underground. The drive up the mountain area of Hinode was lovely, and we felt we had left Tokyo. A great day trip or weekend trip.
Other Tokyo onsens we love:
Oedo Onsen Monogatari (Odaiba, Tokyo)
Keio Takaosan Onsen (Mt. Takao, Tokyo)

Both the men’s and women’s bath areas have two types of baths. There is a hot spring for beauty and hot spring for muscle relaxation or lifetime youth. Don’t know if I believe those claims, but both were lovely. One bath is indoors, and one is outdoors. There is also a restaurant and relaxation area. The food is typically Japanese fair from friend chicken to sashimi; we had drinks and light meal which were fresh and a good value. I would recommend that you take a bath towel and washcloth since renting costs 500 yen per person. Also, check out the store which has local vegetables and baked goods which were very yummy.
