Here are our 2019 Top Tokyo Summer Fireworks recommendations. Tokyo area fireworks are a must experience. The sky of Tokyo area will be alive with fireworks once the rainy season passes in mid-July. I believe one has not experienced Japan until you wear your yukata (cotton kimono) and geta (wooden sandals) to view hanabi (fireworks). It is great fun! Here are the best 10 Tokyo Area Fireworks. Mark your calendar now, and reserve your river boat or hotel room to get great views. It is also a great time to have a company party or home party if you are lucky to have a view. Details 2019 Top Tokyo Summer Fireworks
1. The Adachi Fireworks (足立の花火)
This year will be the 41st annual Adachi Fireworks although the first event was held in 1924. It is usually well attended since it is the first major fireworks festival of the summer. The fireworks are shot up from two locations along the Arakawa River. According to locals, the best place to view is on the Nishi-Arai side.

2. Kastsushika Nouryo Fireworks (葛飾納涼花火大会)
The year will be the 52nd Katsushika Nouryo Fireworks. The fireworks are shot off from the Katsushika Shibamata Baseball Field. Leave for Shibamata around noon, have a nice lunch and enjoy wandering the quaint streets and riverside of Shibamata before the fireworks begin.

3. Hachioji Fireworks (八王子花火大会)
On the smaller side of firework shows, but fun for younger kids and the crowds not as crazy as other fireworks festivals. You can enjoy a variety of explosions and eat fun Japanese festival food. The show takes place at Hachioji Shimin Kyujo Baseball Park, Fujimori Park.

4. Sumidagawa Fireworks (隅田川花火大会)
July 27th, Saturday; start 19:00-20:30; approximately 20,000 fireworks

Access: Asakusa station on the Tobu-Isezaki , Ginza or Asakusa lines, or Kuramae station on the Toei Oedo Line.
This year will be the 41st Sumidagawa Fireworks. If you only have the time and energy during the steamy summer to see one firework display, I recommend the Sumidagawa Fireworks. They are the oldest having started in 1732 and explosive in size and color. To get great seats book a dinner ride on a yakatabune (Japanese house-boat) for the evening or get a spot on the banks of the Sumida River around noon and take a long afternoon nap.
5. Tachikawa Matsuri Fireworks (立川祭り国営昭和記念公園花火大会)
July 27th, Saturday; start 19:20 – 20:20; approximately 5,000 fireworks

Access: 15 min walk from Tachikawa Station on the Chuo Line
This long running fireworks display is celebrating its 60th year. Fun festival environment and fireworks. Close to the station so easy for little ones. Entrance to the park is about 400 yen for adults but will be free from 5pm on the day of the fireworks. We recommend arriving before 17:00 and pay the entrance fee to secure a good spot as the park becomes extremely crowded from the evening.
6. Itabashi and Todabashi Fireworks (いたばし ＆ 戸田橋花火大会)
August 3th, Saturday; start 19:00-20:30; approximately 12,000 fireworks between the two events

Access: due to crowds the walk to viewing area is a 40-50 min walk from the JR Saikyo Line Toda Koen Station
This firework show is a double show with fireworks set off for two sides of the Arakawa river. It is super crowded since the show lasts for 90 mins (very long in Japan). Bring a plastic sheet, some dinner, and drinks and enjoy. Note it is a long walk from the station so best to bring easy to push strollers (big wheels due to uneven ground) or baby carriers for little ones.
7. Edogawa Fireworks (江戸川区花火大会)
This year will be the 43rd Edogawa Fireworks. 14,ooo fireworks are shot off from Shinozaki Park to the sound of Samba music. You can also view the fireworks from the Chiba side of the Edogawa.

8. Jingu Gaien Fireworks (神宮外苑花火大会)
The Jingu Gaien Fireworks is unique since you need to pay to enter the fireworks area. You can see from tall buildings surrounding the four spots that the events take place but if you want to see up close and personal you need to buy a ticket; starting price 3,500 yen to upwards of 40,000 yen. Ticket details here in Japanese. The show takes place in four areas around Jingu; Jingu Kyujo Ballpark, Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium, Chichibu-no-miya Rugby Field and the Softball Park. The good thing about having a ticket is that you will have a spot and not have to deal with the brutal crowds at other firework events this summer.
August 10th, Saturday; start 19:30-20:30; approximately 12,000 fireworks

9. Ota-ku Fireworks ()
Another smaller fireworks display, about 6,000, but fun for younger kids and the crowds not as crazy as other fireworks festivals. Last year the fireworks were cancelled due to rain so the town is excited to excited to show 1,000 more fireworks this year than last. Recommended to refrain from viewing on the Kawasaki side.
August 15th, Thursday; start 19:30-20:10; approximately 6,000 fireworks

10. Tamagawa Fireworks Festival (たまがわ花火大会)
This year will be the 40th Setagaya-Ku Tamagawa Fireworks Festival. The fireworks are lit off from the Futako-Tamagawa River Playground. The show is actually a battle between Tokyo on one side of the river and Kanagawa on the other side, both sides setting off fireworks the same evening. There is plenty of seating on the grass so bring a blanket and your picnic dinner and enjoy. You can sit either side of the river, but locals say the best view if from the Kanagawa side. Recommended to get your spot by early afternoon. Futako-Tamagawa has lot of shopping so you can come for a 1/2-day visit, buy your food and drink and enjoy.
October 5th, Saturday; start 18:00-19:00; approximately 6,000 fireworks
