Tokyo Area 2019 Chrysanthemum Festivals

Enjoy the clear and crisp skies of autumn to visit the top 10 chrysanthemum festivals in Tokyo. Although people typically associate cherry blossoms with Japan, the chrysanthemum has the richest association with Japan’s culture and history. 1. Meiji-jingu Shrine Chrysanthemum Exhibition (Harajuku, Tokyo) – This exhibition is on the main path leading to the shrine. My favorite part of the exhibit are the adorable bonsai chrysanthemum displays. Autumn is one of the best times to visit Meiji-Jingu not only to see the flowers but also the adorable children visiting the shrine to celebrate 7-5-3.

2. Takahata-fudoson Kiku Matsuri 菊まつり開催 (Kongo-ji Temple, Hino-shi, Tokyo) – This is one of the largest Chrysanthemum festivals in the Tokyo area with over 1,500 varieties of chrysanthemums from 11 cites in the Tama area. There are also plants for sale, as well as, classes on Chrysanthemums in Japanese. If you go on the weekend check to see if the Antique markets is taking place – November Antique Markets.

Tokyo Metropolitan Tourism Chrysanthemum Exhibition 3. Tokyo Metropolitan Tourism Chrysanthemum Exhibition  年度東京都観光菊花大会 (Hibiya Park, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo) – The Tokyo Metropolitan Tourism Chrysanthemum Exhibition is one of the top shows based on quality and quantity. Over 2,000 plants will be on exhibit covering every type of flower and arrangement style. You can also buy seedlings and learn about cultivation methods.

kiku24. Bunkyo Kiku Matsuri (Yushima, Bunkyo-ku) – The temple will display over 2,000 plants selected from nationwide growers. The unique aspect of this kiku matsusi is that the flowers are constructed into dolls. My daughter loved seeing the dolls adorned with flowers.

5. Asakusa Sensoji Temple Chrysanthemum Exhibition (Asakusa, Tokyo) – Hundreds of Chrysanthemum plants are displayed near the temple. You can also buy some seedlings. A fun trip is to take the River boat up the Sumida river than visit the Sensoji temple and end with a shopping trip in Kappabashi.

6. Shinjuku Gyoen Kikkadan-ten (新宿御苑菊花壇展) – Shinjuku Gyoen is an oasis in the middle of skyscrapers. Take an obento lunch and enjoy a few hours.  The admission fee is 200 yen for adults and 50 yen for middle school students and younger.

8. Jindai Botanical Gardens (神代植物公園)  (Chofu, Tokyo)

Chrysanthemum Festival9. Kitain Temple at Kawagoe (Kawagoe, Saitama) –  Thousands of Chrysanthemum on display from all over the Kanto area. Also the largest selection of seedlings I have seen at a festival.  When you visit, Kawagoe plan to spend the day and tour the old Edo area.

Kawasaki Daishi is a popular temple for hatsumōde (the first visit to a place of worship in the new year). In 2006, 2.72 million people engaged in hatsumōde here,
