Ajisai (Hydrangea) are blooming all over Tokyo! These colorful flowers mark the start to rainy season or Tsuyu (梅雨). Enjoy viewing the many varieties of Hydrangeas at these five Ajisai (Hydrangea) Festivals in Tokyo.

June 17 & 18, 2017 Tokyo Weekend Family Events and Activities Bunko ku ajisai festival1. Bunkyo Ajisai Matsuri 2018 (Hakusan, Bunkyo-ku) – The most magnificent display of Ajisai in Tokyo is at Hakusan Shrine. The Shrine has over 3,000 Ajisai plants which when in full bloom are a sea of blue. Hakusan Shrine is also one of the most important shrines in Tokyo having been built in the 8th century to pray for a remedy for smallpox. The path leading up to the shrine is very charming with many small food booths and stone lanterns. This year they will have a bazaar on Sunday, June 10th from 11:00~, dental counseling corner, music and dance performances throughout the weekend and stalls selling good. The shrine is now a designated Important Cultural Property by the Metropolitan Government of Tokyo. Even if your kids are not big fans of flower viewing, they will be impressed by the sheer number!

2. Toshimaen Ajisai Matsuri (Nerima) – The Toshimaen Ajisai Matsuri has about 10,000 hydrangeas of 150 varieties located in the Toshimaen Amusement Park. Walk through their garden and visit their see of blue hydrangeas or take a ride on their model train which will take you through the Ajisai Garden (300 JPY/per person). Couple with a visit to the Amusement park with a variety of retro rides, or an evening visit to the Insect Pavillion to see fireflies from 17:00-19:30. This will also hold a Flea market with 200 stalls on May 27 & June 16 from 10:00-16:00 (Entry 200 JPY/pp).

3. Takahata Fudosan Ajisai Festival 2018 (Hino, Tokyo) – The Takahata Fudosan Ajisai Festival, located in Hino City in the western suburbs of Tokyo, has about 7,500 hydrangeas of 200 varieties on different elevations of the mountain. Enjoy the Ajisai then visit the Takahata Fudo Kinshu Temple. The temple includes a lot of cultural assets, some of which are designated as Important Cultural Assets.  In the hall of five-story pagoda, there is Kobo Daishi (founder of Shingon sect) and 1000 Jizo Statues (sentai Jizoo).

4. Showa Memorial Park Hydrangeas –  Showa Memorial Park has about 9300 hydrangeas of 60 varieties located on the north side of the Fureai Bridge. It`s a huge park and a great spot to bike, hike, climb nets, and bounce on huge white soft blobs while viewing the hydrangeas. The park is also beautiful in Spring for cherry blossoms and tulips, or the Autumn foliage. Showa Memorial Park is approximately a 50-70 min trip from central Tokyo via car or train. Access: 2 min walk from Nishi Tachikawa Station, 14 min walk from Tachikawa station. We recommend you take the Chuo Line from Shinjuku directly to Nishi Tachikawa station which is a good spot to get a rental bike. There is a also a large parking lot at the Nishi Tachikawa park side (near the station). Cost to park is 820 JPY for the day.

Ikiiki Asakusa Ajisai Festival 2018 – The Ikiiki Asakusa Ajisai Festival (いきいき浅草あじさい祭) is held at Chokokuji temple and will have 100 kinds of rare Hydrangea that you can buy (1 basket 1500 JPY) as well as medicinal cooking or moxibustion to refresh you body. The Houroku Moxibustion Reception (2000 JPY) is a traditional Buddhism Reception held at Chokokuji Temple. They place a houroku (unglazed pot) on the pressure point on top of your head to relieve Summer heat sickness then pray for good health.
