Female Artists Gather to Raise Awareness for Women’s Rights and Celebrate International Women’s Day 2. Female Artists Gather to Raise Awareness for Women’s Rights and Celebrate International Women’s Day (March 1-18, 2016)

Following the great success of the inaugural “Blossom Blast” all-female artist exhibition in 2016, once again TokyoDex and UltraSuperNew Gallery have teamed up with curator Miki Saito to continue this progressive movement in 2017. “Blossom Blast” is a feminist art movement created to raise social awareness while showcasing that amazing talented pool of ambitious female artists in Japan. Globally, female artists exert an incredible influence in the art scenes of cities worldwide, Tokyo not withstanding. However, the playing field for female artists remains far from level, and this poses a gender equality issue in the arts. The number of practicing female artists are still eclipsed by the number of men, and the average pricing for artwork created by women tend to be lower than that of their male counterparts, reflecting a problematic trend around the world. Gender inequality in Japan remains stagnant and dire. This year, Blossom Blast will expand beyond just being an art exhibition and will include creative events to empower the general audience of women across Japan. Through collaboration with Lean In Tokyo, we will host seminars that include panelists such as Met Life CEO Sachin Shah, to discuss how Japan can move forward and foster an environment in which women can blossom and become a leading force within society.
