tokyo weekend family eventsBlessing of the Animals & Adoption Fair @ The Franciscan Chapel Center  – The Franciscan Chapel Center is a Catholic Church founded by followers of St. Francis of Assisi. St. Francis, the patron saint of the church, loved God and His Creation very much, yet had a special place in his heart for all creatures great and small. Legend has it that he could tame the meanest wolf, but could also preach to the gentlest birds. Thus, St. Francis is considered the patron saint of animals and his Franciscan friars carry on this tradition of caring for animals. It is our church’s tradition that on the Sunday before the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, that we hold a special blessing for all pets/animals and their caretakers.

In celebration of the patron saint of our parish, St. Francis of Assisi, the Chapel Center will hold its annual pet blessing at 2:30pm on Sunday, October 6th. We invite all pets of shapes and sizes to come and be blessed by our warm and friendly friars.

In conjunction with the blessing, the church is holding an adoption fair with the volunteers from ARK (Animal Rescue Kanto). ARK will be bringing cats and dogs that are looking to be adopted or fostered by families in Tokyo. Please stop by and meet some of these furry, friendly and fabulous animals needing families of their own.

Tokyo weekend events

Showa Park Cosmo Flower Festival (Tachikawa, Tokyo) – until late October – Showa Park is an amazing outdoor adventure anytime of the year! In the fall you can see over 4 million of Cosmo while biking and playing in the park. Before you visit you can checkout the status of the blooming at the photos on the park’s website. Showa Memorial Park is approximately a 50-70 min trip from central Tokyo via car or train. Biking, hiking, climbing nets, bouncing on huge white soft blobs and hiding from dragons can keep the little ones busy as you view the beautiful cherry blossoms, tulips, or foliage.  You can spend the entire day at the park so pack a lunch and all your sports equipment. The park is over 150 hectors and has over 11 kilometers of bike trails. We highly recommend that you rent bikes near the Nishi  Tachikawa entrance to see the entire park, and allows for easy access to a variety of playgrounds which are very spread out. Dogs are also welcome on a leash (there is a small non-leash dog run).  There is also an Ikea in Tachikawa (opens at 9:00).  There are so many great adventures in Western Tokyo!

Tamagawa Fireworks Festival (たまがわ花火大会),Top Tokyo Summer Fireworks -  Tokyo HanabiTamagawa Fireworks Festival (たまがわ花火大会)

This year will be the 41st Setagaya-Ku Tamagawa Fireworks Festival. The fireworks are lit off from the Futako-Tamagawa River Playground. The show is actually a battle between Tokyo on one side of the river and Kanagawa on the other side, both sides setting off fireworks the same evening. There is plenty of seating on the grass so bring a blanket and your picnic dinner and enjoy. You can sit either side of the river, but locals say the best view if from the Kanagawa side. Recommended to get your spot by early afternoon. Futako-Tamagawa has lot of shopping so you can come for a 1/2-day visit, buy your food and drink and enjoy.

October 5th, Saturday; start 18:00-19:00; approximately 6,000 fireworks
Website: http://www.tamagawa-hanabi.com/ (Japanese language only)
Access: 5 min walk from the Futako-Tamagawa Station on the Tokyu-Denentoshi Line or the Tokyu Oimachi Line

Bolivia Festival (Shiba Park, Minato-ku) – The Bolivia Festival will be held for the 4th time on Sunday, October 6th. The festival will help to introduce the public to the country of Bolivia in South America through music, food, and dance. Great way to introduce your family to the country and people of Bolivia. A small event but sure to liven-up the October weekend. The park also has a very nice playground or little ones. We also recommend you investigate Zōjō-ji Temple and the other areas of the great Shiba Park. There are many restaurants and a Starbucks near the Daimon Gate that are family friendly.
