Tokyo Kids Write (Aug 7 -10th; Minami Azabu) – English Writing Camp for 9-12 Year Olds

Don’t let summer slide set your creative writer back – join the Tokyo Kids Write program. Campers step away from textbooks and jump into hands-on experiences that inspire their best thinking and most exciting words.  It means flexible seating, warming up with music and a silly writing prompt, stretching out and feeling free to create. Depending on our writing task and project, it may be interviewing community members or thinking bigger, while we work in our beautiful workshop space of Best Living Japan. We will work like journalists and chase the story.

How is this different than another writing camp? Well…

We welcome award-winning, Japan-based authors as they join camp sessions, share personal tips, and offer specific feedback to our young authors!
Leza LowitzThis year, we welcome acclaimed author, Leza Lowitz! Her powerful novel-in-verse book, Up From the Sea, will connect to our camp as we learn how to research and connect historical knowledge with imagination to create our own work! Leza will join us in our studio for what will surely be a momentous day within the week. (Books will be supplied).
Instead of simply having ONE teacher who edits and comments on our work, we operate as a workshop, valuing every reader and writer.
Reluctant readers and writers take bigger risks and dare to engage when it doesn’t feel like an assignment. This is camp and we’ll make it great! We work in the atmosphere where every child is engaged.

Teachers Introduction
Melissa Uchiyama, Tokyo Kids WriteMelissa Uchiyama –
I am a US National Board Certified teacher who has worked as a mentor for other educators and has led and continues to lead small group classes, whole classrooms in early literacy, emergent literacy and sophisticated writing programs. In over fifteen years as a teacher, I have worked with a variety of needs and communities, both in south Florida, where I began, to the Japanese and international families that make up Tokyo. I have met privately and in classrooms, teaching pre-school children, elementary, middle, and high school students working towards college acceptance, even teaching MBA students the art of essay writing. I am even lucky enough to reach Japanese senior citizens, facilitating writing through the form of journaling and vocabulary work. Every person has a voice and a story. I love helping people connect through powerful writing.
I believe in the power of asking good questions, of prompting and facilitating a prime learning environment. I believe that young writers can be each other’s biggest fans as they build community with their insightful words. I believe that helping young people become strong writers will serve them within multiple languages, through relationships, careers, and within every calling and season of their lives.
