Top 10 Things to do in Tokyo in March 2017 Tokyo Family Activities1. View the Cherry Blossoms. Although cherry blossoms have peaked in Tokyo, you can still catch plenty of late bloomers around the city. If you missed the peak you can take a quick trip north to Nagano, Tohoku or  Kanazawa over the next few weeks to catch cherry blossoms  Visit our 2018 list of the top Cherry Blossom Picnic Parks, Strolls and Boat Views. 2.  Visit Showa Memorial Park, Tachikawa, Tokyo  – late March through June for all types of flowers – Showa Memorial Park has more than 1,500 cherry trees, including 200 or so Somei Yoshina cherry trees, 220,000 tulips of 13 varieties, 1.8 million poppies, and dainty blue nemophila flowers blossom in the spring. Located about 60 mins from downtown Tokyo (google map). Kanamara Matsuri at Kawasaki3. Kanamara Matsuri,  Kanagawa-ken (Sunday, April 1st)  – Aka the Penis Festival (sorry parents) – Kanamara Matsuri is translated as the “Festival of the Steel Phallus”, aka the penis festival. The Shrine the festival is held at is well known to pray for prosperity, easy childbirth, solid marriages, and fertility.

Roppongi Spring Festival 20184. Roppongi Hills Spring Festival 2018, Minato-ku, Tokyo (April 6 – 8th) –  Enjoy cherry bloom, rent a kimono, make a beaded craft at Boreland, enjoy the entertainment and food. The annual Roppongi Hills Spring festival is always family friendly!

5. Kamakura Festival, Kanagawa – ken (April 8 – 15th, Sundays the best day to attend) – The entire town of Kamiura transforms into a Kamakura Buddhafestival area with parades and mikoshi to celebrate the the height of Kamakura power during the Medieval Period.  Tsurugaoka Hachimangu is a historic shrine and a symbol of Kamakura. The main attractions are the shizuka no mai dance performed in the Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine on the second Sunday and yabusame on the third Sunday. You can also see Yabusame, the art of shooting arrows on horseback.  I highly recommend you take the train due to large crowds. This is a super fun festival to attend and visit Kamakura. Asakusa Kannon-ura Ichiyo Sakura-matsuri Festival6. Asakusa Kannon-ura Ichiyo Sakura-matsuri Festival (Edo Yoshiwara Oiran-dochu Procession) (Sat, April 14th) – If you want to experience a procession from the Edo period (1603–1868) with beautifully appointed geisha and servants this might be the best opportunity. Ichiyo Sakura Matsuri is one of the three great festivals of Asakusa shrine area and each year over 100,00 people gather to see the procession, shows and flea market; as well as the beautiful cherry blossoms that line the procession. While in the area check out Kappabashi (Kitchen town) and the Drum Museum!

Tokyo International School Sakura Festival 20188. Tokyo International School, Minato-ku, Tokyo (April 21st) –  will be hosting their 2018 Cherry Blossom Fair on Saturday, April 21st from 11:00-16:00. This is an exciting opportunity to celebrate the Sakura season while experiencing cultures from around the world.

There will be international cuisine, music, games, and entertainment, as well as a raffle and silent auction with items ranging from round trip tickets to Paris to designer handbags. All are welcome, and admission is free. So please come and enjoy the festivities!

9. Aoba Japan International School, Nerima-ku, Tokyo (April 21st) – Will hold their annual Spring Festival on Saturday, April 21st, 2018 from 9:30 – 15:00 (rain or shine!) – Enjoy a variety of games and performances, sample food and drink from around the world, shop at their bazaar and enter a raffle to win fabulous prizes!

Azalea Festival Nezu Shrine10. Nezu Shrine Annual Azalea Festival, Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo (Late-April to early May) – Nezu Shrine Azalea Festival from mid-April till the end of Golden Week (1st week of May) is a beautiful landscape of ancient Japanese temple buildings, bright orange gates and thousands and thousands of azalea bushes in every color possible.

Sagamihara koinobori11. Sagamihara Koinobori Festival, Kanagawa-ken (April 29 – May 5th) – The Sagamihara Koinobori Festival (泳げ鯉のぼり相模川) has been held over 30 years to celebrate Children’s Day on May 5th. Five huge wires are hooked over the river and 1,200 koi nobori are hung to swim in the sky. The swimming koi represent the strong and good health of their children. You can get to Sagamihara in about 1.5 hours driving from central Tokyo or 2 hours on train. Location of the koinobori are here (google map). While in the area you can also visit the Sagamigawa Fureai Science Museum Aquarium Sagamihara.

Nemophilia @ Hitachi Seaside Park 12. View Millions of Nemophila @ Hitachi Seaside Park late April to May – More than 4.5 million nemophila bloom on a 3.5 hectare hill in the park, creating a beautiful contrast with the blue sky. Kameido Teinjin Shrine, Wisterial13. Kameido Tenjin Shrine Wisteria Festival, Koto-ku, Tokyo (Late April to early May) – The Kameido Tenjin Shrine (亀戸天神社) is the number one spot in Tokyo to see magnificent cascades of hanging purple wisteria (fuji flowers). The flowers are in bloom from late April through the beginning of May at which time the shrine holds the annual Wisteria Festival.
