There are holiday illuminations across Japan but here are our recommended top Tokyo Area 2016 Illuminations picks. Most have started, but some of the best will begin on December 1st. A great time of the year to walk or bike around Tokyo. Since the sunsets so early in Japan you can enjoy even before dinner! The following are in alphabetical order.
Tokyo Area 2016 Illuminations – Quick Reference Guide
1. Decks Tokyo Beach (Odaiba, Tokyo) November – December 25, 2016
The park and beach area in from of Decks is lite with over 220,000 lights. Bright colored lights to bring joy to all ages. A brilliant view from both the deck of the shopping center as well as from the bay if you are lucky to be on a boat shuttle.

2. Marunouchi Illuminations 2016 (Marunouchi, Tokyo) November 10 – February 19, 2017
One of the longest illuminations which is trying very hard to be eco-friendly with low-energy bulbs. The lights are as beautiful as ever in their magnificent champagne color. Enjoy some high-end shopping after work or play.
Time of illumination: Everyday 17:30 – 23:00; December 1 – December 28 17:00 – 24:00

3. Omotesando Dori (Omotesando, Tokyo) – December 1 – December 25, 2016
One of my favorite illuminations is the light-up of over 100 zelkova trees between Jingumae and Omotesando crossing. Over 500,000 lights are used over 500m. The champagne and orange lights warm many hearts for holiday season.

4. Omotesando Hills (Omotesando, Tokyo) November 9 – December 25, 2016
This indoor illumination is quite brilliant with over 300,000 lights. The 10m illuminated tree hung with Swarovski crystals is amazing. Definitely gets you in the holiday mood to buy presents. I would combine a late afternoon visit to Omotesando Hills to make sure you catch the illuminations outside from sunset.

5. Rainbow Bridge 2016 Illuminations (Minato-ku, T0kyo) – December 3, 2016 – January 3, 2017
The Rainbow Bridge will be adorned with rainbow colors for this holiday season. Makes driving over the bridge to Odaiba even more fun!

6. Roppongi Hills (Roppongi, Tokyo) November 14 – December 25 2016
Walking or driving through Roppongi Hills is always very magical with all the beautiful blue and white lights. This year some heat is added with the lights changing to orange every 20 mins or so. Over 1,220, 000 lights are set-up for the display this year.

7. Sagamiko Resort Pleasure Forest (Sagamiko, Kanagawa-ken) – October 22, 2016 – April 9, 2017
If you want to see the largest illumination show in the Kanto area head to the Sagamiko Resort in Kanagawa-ken. Located a 50 min train ride from Shinjuku you can enjoy a day of rides at the Fujikyu Amusement while seeing the show. The show titled Smash Swans this year is an amazing illumination and music performance. Illuminations entrance fee is 800 JPY for adults and children 500 JPY.

8. Shibuya Hikarie (Shibuya, Tokyo) – November – December 25, 2016
A smaller indoor illumination but younger children will enjoy the Disney Crystal Magic decoration in the Shibuya Hikarie Building while mom and dad shop or enjoy a meal.

9. Tokyo Dome City (Suidobashi, Tokyo) – November 10 – January 29th, 2017
Combine a fun day of indoor roller blading or riding outdoor amusement while viewing the brilliant annual illumination festival at Tokyo Dome. This years’ illuminations are held in collaboration with the country of Italy to celebrate 150 years of relations.
Time of illumination: November 10 – January 29th, 2017; daily 16:00 – 1:00 (past midnight)

10. Tokyo Midtown (Roppongi, Tokyo) November 15 – December 25 2016
This is a “must see” light show. This years show is beautiful with shooting stars and zooming motions. Over 520,000 blue and white lights are involved in the show. Great locations to watch from outside are at the base of the Starlight Garden or on the overwork to the Mid-Town buildings.

11. Tokyo Sky Tree Town (Sumida, Tokyo) – November 10 – December 25, 2016
The Tokyo Sky Tree will be lite with over 40,000 lights from mid-November to get one in the holiday spirit. From December 10th a projection light show will begin to transform the Sky Tree into the largest Chirstmas tree in Tokyo. If you have not been to the Sky Tree, this will be a fun time to visit.

12. VenusFort (Odaiba, Minato-ku, Tokyo) – November 3, 2016 – mid-March 2017
Pretty cool projection mapping taking place at the Venus Fort Shopping Center this winter. The show is titled FROZEN VENUSFORT. The decorated hall is an imitation European city in the Middle Ages and definitely makes the little ones image they are in a fairy tale with theatre, music and illuminations.

13. Yebisu Garden Place (Ebisu, Tokyo) – November, 2016 – January 9,, 2017
After grabbing a dinner at Shack Shack in Ebisu or Shopping at the new Muji store check out the beautiful illuminations at Yetis Garden Place. The main feature is the massive Baccarat crystal chandelier surrounded by illuminations.

14. Yokohama Landmark Tower (MinatoMirai, Yokohama) – November 10 – December 25, 2016
If you have little ones, who enjoy fantasy and the Nutcracker story head down to Yokohama for an evening viewing of the 180 degrees Nutcracker performance by dolls lite by brilliant lighting. The free show is held in the Dock Yard Garden at the Yokohama Landmark Tower.
