There is no attendance fee, but donations of 1,000 JPY are appreciated.

TELL Seminar – Helping Your Teen To Develop A Healthy Body Image

TELL Exceptional Parenting Program workshop will be looking at body image issues ( the unrealistic internalized sense of what one’s body looks like) and how they can negatively impact young people and their families. TELL psychotherapist and TELL Eating Disorders Treatment Program Coordinator, Kaori Ogiwara, will walk us through how parents, teachers and the community can help promote body acceptance in young people and thereby help to promote mental and physical wellness.

An eating disorder is a serious mental illness with significant, life-threatening physical and psychological complications. Complex interplay of biological, psychological, social and interpersonal factors lead to its development. While it can arise from a variety of potential causes for an individual, body dissatisfaction has been repeatedly identified by current research as a common risk factor across all types of eating disorders.
In this presentation, some factors that may negatively affect body image and how parents, teachers and the community can help promote body acceptance in the young person will be discussed.

About the presenter:

Kaori Ogiwara graduated from the University of Queensland with Honours in Psychology and earned her Masters degree in clinical psychology from Ochanomizu Women’s University, Tokyo. Her areas of special training include application of CBT-based therapy to depression, anxiety and issues related to eating and body image.   Besides her position as the Coordinator of TELL Eating Disorder Treatment Program, Ms. Ogiwara also sees adults for individual therapy, as well as offers individual and family-based treatments for adolescents struggling with eating disorders and other related conditions in Japanese and English.
