4. Kawagoe Festival (Kawagoe, Saitama) – One of my favorite places outside of Tokyo! If you have not taken a day trip to Kawagoe the October 14th weekend is a great weekend to go!  My personal Kawagoe Festivalfavorite time to attend and see the floats all lit up is between 18:00 -20:00. I recommend heading up to Kawagoe on the train early in the afternoon and enjoying an early dinner, shopping and enjoying the festival.  The two-tiered floats are amazing to view each having a unique story. Here is some background information on the floats.  Kawagoe Festival’s biggest highlight is then several floats intersect each other at a crossing and competed with each other jostling to the Hayashi performance (a traditional Japanese orchestra comprised of flutes, drums, bells and dancing). When two or more floats meet and compete, it is called ‘Hikkawase’ and is an incredibly high energy event to see 1st hand.
