The Meguro Sky Garden is a beautiful, 7,000 square meter circular garden park built on top of Ohashi Junction, a structure that connects two major expressways. The garden park is open year round and is home to a fruits and vegetables garden, greenery, impressive views of the city scape, and on a clear day a view of Mount Fuji. One would never know hundreds of cars were zipping by beneath our feet. The Meguro Sky Garden also houses a rice patty where local elementary school children are given the opportunity to plant rice “the traditional way”, and a lottery drawing is held for those who want the opportunity to pick and eat the fruit and vegetables in season.
We enjoyed taking a leisurely stroll through the greenery while taking in the aroma of fresh flowers especially the Gardenia jasminoides (クチナシ) – those were baby`s favorite. Visitors are welcome to bring a lunch and picnic on the green or in covered spaces and enjoy the peace and quiet. Dogs welcome but must be leashed and registered at the front office.
The Meguro Sky Garden has a walkway that is connected to the 9th floor of the Cross Air Tower, a residential and business space which houses a beautiful library with views of the garden and health & welfare center. They even have a separate kid`s space with a small selection of international books. Take the elevator down to the first floor for access to LIFE supermarket, a bank and athletic field. A great spot to spend the day.
*Ohashi Junction was completed in March 2013 and connects two major expressways, the Shuto Expressway with the Yamate dori Expressway. Residents were first against building a junction in the neighborhood until architects proposed to build an enclosed structure to reduce the noise and air pollution as well as house a green space and sport area for the residents.
