Sanja matsuri, Best Living Japan5. Tokyo: Sanja Matsuri Details (Asakusa, Tokyo)  – Don’t miss one of Tokyo’s biggest festivals of the year which over one million people attend over the three-day period (Friday – Sunday). Each day has parades, dancing, music, and food. However, the biggest day is Sunday when three huge mikoshi (portable shrines) are carried through the neighborhoods as men fight for a chance to pull their weight.  The Sanja Matsuri (festival) takes place at the Asakusa Shrine right next to Sensoji Temple. The festival reportedly started over 700 years ago to celebrate the three deities of the local.
