Kintsugi Gold Joinery Classes, Aoyama – Learn How to “Fix” Treasures

As an avid antiquer, I have found cracked plates and cups that deserved a second life with Kintsugi Gold Joinery.  I was thrilled to find Saideigama studio in Aoyama that offers an introductory two-hour lesson. Kintsugi (金継ぎ, きんつぎ) is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with lacquer and then to@@ing with a dusting of gold, silver or Kintsugi Gold Joinery Classes, Aoyamaplatinum power.  The wabi-sabi (侘寂, transience and imperfection) technique enhances the ceramics beauty by enhancing the cracks and nicks!  Search out a treasure at one of our favorite Tokyo antique markets and kintsugi it!

Saideigama offers classes with basic English instruction. The teachers have all graduated from top fine art programs and universities in Japan and really know their crafts.  The Kintsugi Gold Joinery Classes, Aoyamaintroduction class costs between 7,000 – 9,000 JPY depending on the piece of ceramic you choose. From selecting your treasure to the final piece, the teacher will walk you through each step. After completing my introduction class, I am Kintsugi struck and have now signed up for the four-week program.  I have some family heirlooms I would also like to fix, but I would like to see how my skill progresses before deciding to do myself or to ask the stores experts to fix for me. If you are not crafty but have treasures to repair the store offers the paid services. You also can study ceramics at the studio. Good family activity for teenagers in Tokyo.Kintsugi Gold Joinery Classes, Aoyama

To make a reservation you can complete the Japanese only form on their website or you can call in a request. You can try calling in English but there may not always be an English speaker in the studio. Ask a friend if needed.

Kintsugi Gold Joinery Classes, AoyamaWhile in the neighborhood we recommend shopping at Sostrene Grene, Flying Tiger  for crafts and knick nacks, Kawano Gallery for second life kimonos and Sou Sou Boutique, Madu, and the Spiral Store for beautiful Japanese crafted items. There are many great restaurants for lunch in the area but three of our favorite are Franze and Evans, Brown Rice Cafe and about 5 minute walk away Citron. For a wonderful coffee break check out Dominique Ansel Bakery, or in warmer weather shaved ice at Sulbing Korean Shaved Ice.
