Karuizawa is a mountain resort in Nagano just a 1 hr Shinkansen ride from Tokyo. Japanese flock to this location all year round. It`s a popular tourist-vacation spot in the summer because it`s quite cool providing a pleasant escape from Tokyo`s heat and humidity. Various outdoor activities in summer include tennis, hiking, cycling and golf; and in winter, skiing and skating in winter.
Shopping is concentrated at the Karuizawa Prince Shopping Plaza and the famed shopping street, Karuizawa Ginza. The Prince Shopping Plaza is an outlet mall for popular brands, outdoor and sporting goods and local souvenirs, and the shopping street just a couple of kilometers north of the station, is where you`ll find various shops, restaurants, wines, honey and jams produced from locally grown fruit.
Take the JR Nagano Shinkansen to Karuizawa.
