Kameido Teinjin Shrine, Wisterial

Kameido Tenjin Shrine – Wisteria Festival until May 5th

The Kameido Tenjin Shrine (亀戸天神社) is the number one spot in Tokyo to see magnificent cascades of hanging purple wisteria (fuji flowers). I visited yesterday for the first time and was so thrilled with the garden and the shrine. The flowers are in bloom from late April through the beginning of May at which time the shrine holds the annual Kameido Tenjin Shrine, Best Living JapanWisteria Festival. The shrine will not disappoint young and old with its flowers, bridges, ponds teaming with turtles and koi, and stately shrine. Definitely  a must in the spring.

Tokyo’s Kameido Tenjin Shrine is most well-known for its famous arched bridge and the purple wisteria hanging from trellises.  The flowers were supposedly planted in the Edo period the bridges were originally build in the mid-1600s but burned down during WWII. The present bridges are replicates constructed in the 1950s. The Kameido Shrine is dedicated to the 9th-century scholar and poet Sugawara no IMG_5878Michizane.  The Shrine has also been the subject of many famous artists, including Hiroshige who captured the shrine as #65 in his “One Hundred Famous Views of Edo”.
