Kadokawa Culture Museum

Kadokawa Culture Museum (Tokorozawa Saitama-ken) – Museum, Team Lab and More

The Kadokawa Culture Museum and new TeamLab exhibit opened on August 1, 2020. The Kadokawa Culture Museum designed by Kuma Kengo is part of a new development called Tokorozawa Sakura Town in Saitama. Kadokawa is one of the largest Japanese publishers in Japan producing books, magazines, anime, and movies. Tokorozawa is located one hour from central Tokyo via car or train so best to combine a visit on a day trip to Kawagoe or sweet potato (Oct-Nov) or blueberry picking (July-Aug). Here are our other Saitama kids’ favorites.

The Kadokawa Culture Museum facility holds a library, an art museum, a modern Japanese shrine and a natural history museum. Designed by Kengo Kuma it is an awe-inspiring stone building. Due to COVID the library and natural history museum are not yet open, but tickets to the Kengo Kuma exhibit are available.

There are exhibits and library entrance to enjoy. Tickets myst be reserved in advance. For latest exhibit information in Japanese check here. Unfortuatnely they do not update the English section of their website very often. https://kadcul.com/event

Musashino Wood Park TeamLab Exhibit (Aug 1, 2020, until TBD) – TeamLab has installed about 100 one meter high glowing acorn or alien shaped eggs in the local park. During the day the objects are silver, at night objects change colors automatically or if a person touches the objects. You can walk freely along the path watching the objects change color. You are allowed to stay until closing, but 30 -60 mins is enough time to enjoy. If you are traveling from more than 45 mins away, I do not recommend traveling that far just for this exhibit. Combine with other plans. Also, use the bathroom in the Kadokawa complex because the public bathrooms in the park are the most disgusting I have ever experienced in Japan. TeamLab should be finding a renovation of the local park bathroom – give that back the community that now has glowing eggs in their local park. Cost depends on age and visiting time. The daytime is cheaper than night, weekdays cheaper than weekends. Range 300 – 1,2o0 yen. Details on this link.  Open 12:00 – 22:00 daily with a one hour break around 16:00- 17:00 depending
