If you love to ski, and you want your kids to be great skiers, then Junior Ski Camp is the best kids weekend ski camp I can recommend. Junior Ski Camp is located in the wonderful ski area of Shiga Kogen in Nagano. My three boys attended the kids weekend ski camp for eight years, and now all three are double black diamond skiers. My daughter has just started attending (she is 7) and LOVES Junior Camp. Sadly, I can no longer keep up with any of them on snow.
Junior Ski Camp runs almost every weekend from the last week of November through May GW (golden week). They also run a few longer camp session for the holiday breaks over Christmas and in March. The focus of the camp is racing, with some free skiing. Many of the campers do participate in Japan racing competitions, but many others just go to have fun and learn great ski skills. Most of the participants in the kids weekend ski camp are Japanese speakers. However, there are staff and other campers with English ability for non-Japanese speakers to have a great time.
Junior Ski Camp – Weekend and Holiday Ski Camp for Kinder to Teens
Kids weekend ski camp usually departures on Friday night either from Yotsuya station or Tokyo station depending on the number of kids attending that weekend. All campers return to Tokyo around 6:00 p.m. on Sunday night. Kids can attend one weekend, or they can sign-up for multiple weekends and leave their ski equipment up at the lodge for the winter. The camp also has a program where you can rent skis for the season, or buy and sell back to them once the kids outgrow the skis.
If you love to ski and can’t be without your kids for the weekend, you can also stay at the lodge, but you need to have your own room. When the kids were very young we would go with them and enjoy a weekend of skiing as a couple while the kids were in the camp program – double fun for mom, dad and kiddies. Junior Ski Camp is managed by the Uchida family who has owned and run the lodge and camp for over 40 years. Many of the parents of present campers attended themselves as children. The campers stay in 4-8 person rooms and eat together in the dining hall. The youngest campers are five years and oldest junior high school age; many are sibling groups.
I highly recommend this camp and hope you will consider for your family. The Junior Ski Camp can handle email communication in English, so please contact them for any information you may need. Also, you can ask questions in the comment section below. Reservations are being accepted now for the season. Contact info below.
