Zojoji Tanabata Festival (Shiba, Minato-ku, Tokyo) – From July 1st – July 7th (Tanabata Day in Japan) you can enjoy the Tanabata Festival at Zojoji Temple in Shiba, Minato-ku. Tanabata is the night when two lovers separated by the Milky Way meet. Until the 7th you can enjoy various festival foods, and writing your wishes on colourful paper to hand in the bamboo. On the 7th, grab a friend or bring you family and appreciate the hundreds of candles displayed on the walkway and steps of the Temple. The Shiba area is a great area to play and relax, check out Shiba Park PlaygroundLe Pain Quotidien or Tokyo Tower.

Milky Way Firefly Festival 2018 (Shirogane, Minato-ku, Tokyo) – This festival is the perfect size and level of excitement for toddlers and elementary school kids. You can enjoy all the regular summer festival foods, performances and games plus the big event of firefly viewing from 19:00 – 21:00 Saturday night rain or shine! The fireflies are transported to Shirogane from Shonai Town in Yamagata Prefecture. The viewing takes place in a large tent which is pitch black inside. Line-up, hold your child’s hand and enjoy the show. It was just right for our 4 and 12-year-old. Great family activity.

Earth Garden Summer 2018 (Yoyogi Park) The Earth Garden Craft Fair takes place four times a year. This weekend visit their “Festival for Future” Summer collection. The earthy folk of Tokyo converge on Yoyogi Park to enjoy discovering eco products, organic foods and music. Visit numerous booths that will be displaying products and services to this eco and crafty group. Very fun, and impossible to walk way empty-handed. There is also a good music line-up to keep you dancing. Kids will definitely enjoy participating in the baby and kids activities as well as wandering the stalls with parents.

Tokyo Daijingu Tanabata Kigansai (Fujimi, Chiyodaku, Tokyo)  – Enjoy the festival from July 1 to 7 to celebrate Tanabata. Make a wish on a tanzaku slip for 300 yen and hang it on a nearby Bamboo. The bamboo with beautiful coloured slips of paper will be illuminated on Tanabata night, July 7th. A beautiful sight.

Mori Building Digital Art Museum Epson teamLab Borderless (Odaiba) –  TeamLab Borderless is a group of artworks that form one borderless world. Artworks move out of the rooms freely, form connections and relationships with people, communicate with other works, influence and sometimes intermingle with each other. Visit the 10,000 square meter space, with about 50 artworks on display which all interact with visitors creating a completely new world.

Fuurin MatsuriFuurin Matsuri 2018, Nishiarai (Adachi-ku Tokyo) – A fuurin means wind chime in Japanese. Summer is a time when Japanese families place glass, metal and ceramic fuurins in their gardens to hear the beautiful ting-a-lings of summer breezes. At the Adachi Nishiarai Daishi temple fuurin craft people from across Japan set up booths to sell their creations. There are thousands of fuurin on display and the sound is amazing if the breeze is blowing. Taiko Performers and Wind Chime painting (Adults 1000 yen, Children 500 yen) on Sundays. Highly recommend the beauty of sight and sound.
