1. Hozuki-Ichi / Ground Cherry Pod Fair (Asakusa, Taito-ku)  – Senso-Ji is of the oldest temples and a great place to celebrate July 10th. It is believed that if you make a prayer on July 10th at this temple that it is worth 46,000 other prayer days. Needless to say, this temple is very busy on July 10th. You will also find over 250 vendors selling ground cherry pod plants (Hozuki-Ichi) and wind chimes; both symbols of summer in Japan.

2. The 67th Shonan Hiratsuka Tanabata Matsuri (Hiratsuka City, Kanazawa-Ken) – This is one of theShonan Hiratsuka Tanabata Matsuri, July 9 & 10, 2016
largest Tanabata festivals in the Kanto area. It is well known for the huge size of the Tanabata decorations, lively parade and illuminations. I have never had the chance to attend, but my friends speak highly of the event.

Event Dates and Times: Friday, July 7  –  Sunday, July 9, 2017; Runs from 10:00 to 21:00 (20:00 on Sunday)

4July 8 & 9, 2017 Tokyo Weekend Family Events and Activities - Shitamachi Tanbata festival. Shitamachi Tanabata Matsuri (Taito-ku)  This festival is a fun event which runs between the Asakusa shrines and Kappabashi Dori (Kitchen town) so you can spend a fun full day in the area. The streets are lined with colorful streamers, vendors, performers and parades. Keep an eye out for the Kappa which dances the streets during the festival.

5. ENOSHIMA TENNO-SAI (Kanagawa-ken 江ノ島天王祭 – 神輿海上渡御) – This is a fun festival to watch as men from different shrines carry a mikoshi (portable shrine) around town and then into the ocean waves of Enoshima Beach. After being carried in the sea, the mikoshi is safely returned to Yasaka Shrine. While in Enoshima, I recommend that you visit the Enoshima Aquarium and the Island Caves for a great day of sun and sea.

Tokyo Antique Shrine and Flea Markets7. Antique Hunting: Three great markets this weekend. Please check directly with the planners about rain cancellations. The Gokokuji Antique Fair (Otsuka, Tokyo), Tomioka Hachimangu Shrine Antique Fair (Fukagawa, Tokyo), and the Hanazono Shrine Antique Fair (Shinjuku, Tokyo). Details can be found on our July 2017 Tokyo Antique and Flea Markets. If you do head out remember to apply mosquito repellent and sun protection, and also drink lots of water.
