1. Zojoji Tanabata Festival (Shiba, Minato-ku, Tokyo) – From Saturday, July 1st – July 7th (Tanabata Day in Japan) you can enjoy the Tanabata Festival at Zojoji Temple in Shiba,  Minato-ku. Tanabata is the night when two lovers separated by the Milky Way meet. Until the 7th you can enjoy various festival foods, and writing your wishes on Tanabatacolourful paper (100 yen) to hang on the bamboo. On the 7th, grab a friend or bring your family and appreciate the hundreds of candles displayed on the walkway and steps of the Temple. The Shiba area is a great area to play and relax, check out Shiba Park Playground, Le Pain Quotidien or Tokyo Tower.

ph_saiten2. Tokyo Daijingu Tanabata Kigansai (Fujimi, Chiyodaku, Tokyo)  – Enjoy the festival from July 1 to 7 to celebrate Tanabata. Make a wish on a tanzaku slip for 300 yen and hang it a nearby Bamboo. The bamboo with beautiful coloured slips of paper will be illuminated on Tanabata night, July 7th. A beautiful sight.

Milky Way Firefly Festival 2017 (Shirogane, Minato-ku, Tokyo) – I attended this festival last year, and it was the perfect size and level of excitement for toddlers and elementary school kids.  You can enjoy all the regular summer festival foods, performances and games plus the big event of firefly viewing from 19:00 – 21:00 Saturday night rain or shine! The fireflies are transported to Shirogane from Shonai Town in Yamagata Prefecture. The viewing takes place in a large tent which is pitch black inside. Line-up, hold your child’s hand and enjoy the show. It was just right for our 4 and 12-year-old. Great family activity.

Fuurin Matsuri 4. Fuurin Matsuri 2017, Nishiarai (Adachi-ku Tokyo) – A fuurin means wind chime in Japanese. Summer is a time when Japanese families place glass, metal and ceramic fuurins in their gardens to hear the beautiful ting-a-lings of summer breezes. At the Adachi Nishiarai Daishi temple fuurin craft people from across Japan set up booths to sell their creations. There are thousands of fuurin on display and the sound is amazing if the breeze is blowing. Highly recommend the beauty of sight and sound.

Shitamachi Tanbata festival6. Shitamachi Tanabata Matsuri (Taito-ku)  This festival is a fun event which runs between the Asakusa shrines and Kappabashi Dori (Kitchen town) so you can spend a fun full day in the area. The streets are lined with colorful streamers, vendors, performers and parades. Keep an eye out for the Kappa which dances the streets during the festival.

7. Hozuki-Ichi / Ground Cherry Pod Fair (Asakusa, Taito-ku)  – Senso-Ji is of the oldest temples and a great place to celebrate July 10th. It is believed that if you make a prayer on July 10th at this temple that it is worth 46,000 other prayer days. Needless to say, this temple is very busy on July 10th. You will also find over 250 vendors selling ground cherry pod plants (Hozuki-Ichi) and wind chimes; both symbols of summer in Japan.

8. Ueno Summer Festival 2017, Ueno – From July 15th – August 13th the annual Ueno Park Summer festival will take place. The festival is throughout the park and includes music, food booths, plant sales and all kinds of antiques for sale. You can also enjoy the beautiful lanterns that are set a float on Shinobazu Pond. Put on your Yukata one summer day and enjoy.

July 2017 Tokyo Top Activities and Events10. Mitama Matsuri (Kudansita, Chiyoda-ku) – One of the most attended festivals in Tokyo. Around 300,000 visitors flock to Yasukuni Shrine during the Mitama Matsuri. This festival is to honor the dead each year, and over 30,000 lanterns are displayed. This festival does not offer food or drink but has a great line-up of traditional dances, music performances.

bon16_vis01-200x8011. New Bon Odori (Ikebukuro) – This festival is where one wears a yukata and dances or learns to dance. Everyone is encouraged to jump right in and enjoy the evenings. Not for the shy at heart, but a total blast to dance the night away Japanese Obon style.  Here is a great video to get you in the mood!

13. HandMade in Japan Fes 2017 (Ariake) (ハンドメイドインジャパンフェス) – If you are crafty, or just love to admire crafts you should attend HandMade in Japan Fes – also a great way to avoid the heat. Over 4,000 creators will present their works of art, music and food for view and purchase. Great place to source materials, learn new techniques and gain inspiration. There are over 30 workshops you can participate in to learn a new craft.  I love attending, and always walk away with enough project to keep me busy all year.

Kagurazaka Matsuri 201614. Kagurazaka Matsuri 2017 (Kagurazaka, Shinjuku-ku) – If you have not wondered around the streets of Kagurazaka, you should this weekend to see some old history and charm as well as enjoy a great local festival. Enjoy the 46th annual Kagurazaka Matsuri and feel old Japan with great festival games for the kids and high energy dancing. Be careful you will probably be pulled into the swing of the bon dori.

15. Taiwan Festa 2017 台湾フェスタ (Yoyogi Park) Enjoy with tens of thousands of other folks at the Taiwan Festival in Yoyogi. Sure to be dancing and music by Japanese and Taiwanese talents. I have never attended but have heard that the food at this event is amazing.
