Ueno Summer Festival 20151. Ueno Summer Festival 2017 (Ueno) – From July 15th – August 13th the annual Ueno Park Summer festival will be held around Shinobazuno-ike Pond in the center of Ueno Park. The festival includes music, food booths, antique sales and ice sculptures. You can also enjoy the beautiful lanterns that are set a float on Shinobazu Pond. Put on your Yukata one summer day and enjoy.

3. Mitama Matsuri (Kudansita, Chiyoda-ku) – One of the most attended festivals in Tokyo. Around 300,000 visitors flock to Yasukuni Shrine during the Mitama Matsuri. This festival is to honor the dead each year, and over 30,000 lanterns are displayed. This festival does not offer food or drink but has a great line-up of traditional dances, music performances.

July 15 & 16, 2017 Tokyo Weekend Family Events and Activities4. Africa Heritage Festival (Shinjuku) – A great weekend to enjoy the music, fashion, live stage performances, workshops, parade, and photo exhibitions of Africa. Come learn, eat and enjoy!

5. Setagaya Firefly Festival and Sagiso Market (Kamimachi, Setagaya-ku) – If you have attended the twice annual Setagaya Boroichi, you will know where you are going. This entire market street is taken over by food, game and merchandise vendors. You will also be able to see the local flowers and fire flies as a special treat during the festival. A great example of a local festival that attracts over 20,000 visitors. I do not recommend bringing stroller due to the crowds.

July 15 & 16, 2017 Tokyo Weekend Family Events and Activities6. New Bon Odori (Ikebukuro) – This festival is where one wears a yukata and dances or learns to dance. Everyone is encouraged to jump right in and enjoy the evenings. Not for the shy at heart, but a total blast to dance the night away Japanese Obon style.  Here is a great video to get you in the mood!

7. Yutenji Temple Matsuri (Yutenji) – Yutenji Temple is holding their annual Yutenji Mitama Matsuri (祐天寺み魂まつり)  this weekend, July 16, 17 & 18, 2017. Parents and children from the neighbouring school, Yutenji kindergarten, participate by dancing in colourful yukatas every year. Stop by the grounds late afternoon to learn about the eight different Temple structures and buildings then stay late for the dance festival, food and games. There is enough for all ages to enjoy. Don a yukata and join in the fun!

Tokyo Antique Shrine and Flea Markets8. Antique Hunting:  There are six great markets this weekend. Please check directly with the planners about rain cancellations. The Ueno Summer Festival (Ueno), Yamato Antique Fair (Yamato, Kanagawa), Ryukoji Temple Antique Fair (Tatsunokuchi near Enoshima, Kanagawa Prefecture), Hanazono Shrine Antique Fair (Shinjuku, Tokyo), O-Edo Antique Market (International Forum, Yurakucho), Takahata Fudo Antique Fair (Hino, Tokyo). Details can be found on our July 2017 Tokyo Antique and Flea Markets. If you do head out remember to apply mosquito repellent and sun protection, and also drink lots of water.   1. I love checking out this list each week! Thank you very much for putting it together. I would like to point out, however, that in previous years (I am not attending this year), there were hundreds of food stalls and make shift izakaya at the Mitama Matsuri. It is one of Tokyo’s biggest outdoor night parties. (They even have a haunted house).
