Here are our recommended July 13 – 15, 2019 Tokyo Weekend Family Events and Activities. This weekend is a long weekend to celebrate the Japanese national holiday of Sea Day 海の日 on Monday, July 15th. It will be overcast but  filled with mega festivals so get dressed in your Yukata and have fun. Ueno Summer Festival 2019, Ueno – From July 13th – August 12th the annual Ueno Park Summer festival will take place. The festival is throughout the park and includes music, food booths, plant sales and all kinds of antiques for sale. You can also enjoy the beautiful lanterns that are set a float on Shinobazu Pond. Put on your Yukata one summer day and enjoy.

Doraemon
This weekend Adorable Life-sized Doraemon statues at Roppongi Hills will mark the beginning of their annual Summer Station. The TV Asahi and Roppongi Hills` Summer Station event is filled with live entertainment, games, activities & workshops. Take photos with the unique Doraemon statues, watch live shows and exciting performances, try summer food and cool off with a collection of Kakigori (Shaved Ice flavored with syrup). While you`re there visit the Mori Art Museum for the stunning Shiota Chiharu exhibit, and hands-on Pixar Exhibit – #3 & #6 on our list of Summer 2019 Tokyo Family Friendly Museum Exhibits.

Marine Day Lantern Festival Umi no Akari Matsuri 海の灯まつり (Odaiba) – Pray for the safety of the sea at the 16th annual Marine Day Lantern Festival in Odaiba. 50,000 colored bags are strategically placed creating a pageant of light at Odaiba`s beach front this weekend from 18:30pm. Spend the day in Odaiba with our One Day Itinerary in Odaiba with Kids and finish the day gazing at the beautiful scene.

July 2017 Tokyo Top Activities and Events

Mitama Matsuri (Kudansita, Chiyoda-ku) – One of the most attended festivals in Tokyo. Around 300,000 visitors flock to Yasukuni Shrine during the Mitama Matsuri. This festival is to honor the dead each year, and over 30,000 lanterns are displayed. This festival does not offer food or drink but has a great line-up of traditional dances, music performances.

You will be treated to amazing Brazilian stage performances from leading Brazilian pop stars and musicians. Enjoy your churrasco BBQ and acai smoothies!

Setagaya Firefly Festival and Sagiso Market (Kamimachi, Setagaya-ku) – If you have attended the twice annual Setagaya Boroichi, you will know where you are going. This entire market street is taken over by food, game and merchandise vendors. You will also be able to see the local flowers and fire flies as a special treat during the festival. A great example of a local festival that attracts over 20,000 visitors. I do not recommend bringing stroller due to the crowds.

Tokyo Antique Shrine and Flea MarketsAntique Hunting: There are six great markets this weekend. Please check directly with the planners about rain cancellations. The Ueno Summer Festival (Ueno), Gokokuji Antique Fair (Otsuka, Tokyo), Fuda Tenjin Shrine Antique Fair (Chofu), Fussa Shichifukujin Antique Fair (Fussa, Tokyo), Tomioka Hachimangu Shrine Antique Fair (Fukagawa, Tokyo) – see #5 above 12. Hanazono Shrine Antique Fair (Shinjuku, Tokyo). Details on our July 2019 Tokyo Antique and Flea Markets. If you do head out remember to apply mosquito repellent and sun protection, and also drink lots of water. Good luck and treasure on!
