Wa no Akari x Hyakudan Kaidan1. Wa no Akari x Hyakudan Kaidan, Meguro – If you have never visited Meguro’s Gajoen, this event is a good reason to go. From July 1st – August 27th, you can see a light exhibit that shows some of Japan’s most famous summer festivals and imagery. My favorite parts of the exhibit are the masks from Aomori-ken, the 500 wind bells and the adorable goldfish paper lanterns.  A great place to visit in the rain. There are also some wonderful restaurants in the same building.

4. Milky Way Firefly Festival 2017 (Shirogane, Minato-ku, Tokyo) – I attended this festival last year, and it was the perfect size and level of excitement for toddlers and elementary school kids.  You can enjoy all the regular summer festival foods, performances and games plus the big event of firefly viewing from 19:00 – 21:00 Saturday night rain or shine! The fireflies are transported to Shirogane from Shonai Town in Yamagata Prefecture. The viewing takes place in a large tent which is pitch black inside. Line-up, hold your child’s hand and enjoy the show. It was just right for our 4 and 12-year-old. Great family activity.
