Join the Best Living Japan Team! Teaching Artists Needed – We are hiring for Autumn 2021! Are you a Kanto-based teaching artist looking to impart your creative knowledge to a captivating audience? If so, we’d love to chat! Teaching positions from Autumn 2021 are now closed, however, if you are interested in possible future art teaching roles please feel free to submit your information.   Please review the details below.

Best Living Japan is in search of instructors to join the team to facilitate our vision of enriching the lives of our Tokyo-area community through creative workshops and seminars at our space in Minami Azabu, Minato-ku, Tokyo. Since 2018 we have hosted a variety of artistic workshops aimed at highlighting the amazing arts and crafts, including kintsugi, aizome, and Japanese cooking classes, and are now looking to expand and strengthen our curriculum from fall 2021. If you have experience in arts or culture-related topics, we would love to speak to you.The 2o21 Autumn application period has closed, but please feel free to submit for future consideration on  this Google form and we will contact you.

We promote all of our classes as intensive, hands-on experiences, where students can arrive as beginners, and leave feeling confident in having learned a new skill, or gained insight into a new field or discipline. We encourage an intimate environment where teachers are curious about their students, open to personal dialogue, and friendly conversation.

If you are looking for a chance to show and sell your Art in Tokyo — The Tokyo Art Studio (Gallery owned by Best Living Japan) has rolling submissions for future shows.   This Autumn 2021 submission is now closed but please feel free to submit for exhibition in 2021. We are actively seeking qualified candidates in the following arts disciplines, but are open to other expertise.

  • Painting
  • Basketry (all types, esp. reed basketry)
  • Book arts (papermaking, bookbinding, etc.)
  • Cartooning/Comics
  • Literary Arts (fiction, memoir, spoken word, slam, screenwriting, etc.)
  • Woodworking (turning, carving, etc.)
  • Ceramics
  • Glass Fusing
  • Textiles
  • Printmaking
  • Japanese cooking

Best Living Japan instructors are dedicated professionals with a strong arts background and a commitment to Community Arts Education.  This part-time role’s compensation is commensurate with experience with a base pay of at least 10,000 yen per class and upside dependent on the number of students in a class. Unfortunately, we can not offer Visa sponsorship to part-time employees.

  • Has a degree or equivalent professional experience in the art form they teach, as well as teaching experience, including curriculum planning in the proposed medium

  • Has knowledge of current techniques and best practices, and is eager to always learn more and trends evolve

  • Has good English communications skills and ability to adapt lessons based on student/private group learning styles, age, or skillset. Japanese is not mandatory but a benefit.

  • Can maintain their appropriate administrative basics, such as records, attendance, lesson plans, and handouts
