In an effort to improve the nutritional diets of our families we looked more closely into Japanese packaged kids snacks. Below is calorie, tutorial and allergen comparison of 14 of the most common package snack foods sold in Japan. We all know fruits and veggies are the best but we all love convenient and yummy snacks. My kids raised in Japan love all of these snacks, but after closer research, we will be cutting many of them out of our diets.
Japanese Packaged Kids Snack
1. ハイチュウ Hichu Candy – This hard gummy candy is popular with elementary and above children. Comes in a variety of flavors. One package has 12 pieces. – 1 piece is 4.6 g, 19 kcal, 0.08 g protein, 0.35 g fat, 3.8 g carbs, 0 mg sodium; allergens include gelatin & apple.
2. ラムネ Ramone – The candy version of the sweet kids’ drink Ramona sold at all festivals. 1 plastic container is 29.0 g, 110 kcal, 0.00 g protein, 0.30 g fat, 26.2 g carbs, 0 mg sodium; allergens include gelatin & dairy. Be careful the top of the container is a swallowing hazard.
3. たべっこどつぶつ Tabeko Doubutsu – Buttery biscuits in animal shapes marketed for children 1+ years. 1 snack size package is 24.0 g, 131 kcal, 1.70 g protein, 7.80 g fat, 23.0 g carbs, 93 mg sodium; allergens include wheat & eggs.
4. タマゴボーロ Tamara Boro – Flour egg balls that dissolve in the mouth. A favorite of teething babies. 1 snack size package is, 16.0 g, 63 kcal, 0.20 g protein, 0.20 g fat, 15.0 g carbs, 2.5 mg sodium; allergens include wheat & eggs.
5. うまい棒 umaibo – This is one of the strangest snacks that is super old and also very popular. It is a stick that has the consistency of a huge puffed Cheeto. It comes in a variety of flavors from curry to chocolate There is no nutritional info on the packaging but it can be found on the corporate site. 1 stick is 6.0 g, 35 kcal, 0.40 g protein, 2.30 g fat, 3.0 g carbs, 31 mg sodium; allergens include wheat & soy.
6. ハッピーターン Happytan senbei – Mild and easy consume rice crackers for all ages. 1 senbei is 8.0 g, , 21 kcal, 0.20 g protein, 1.10 g fat, 2.5 g carbs, 22 mg sodium; allergens include soy.7.
7. Pocky Chocolate – Everyone loves the sweat and salty flavor of chocolate pocky. 1 snack size package (avg 17 sticks) is 36.0 g, 182 kcal, 3.10 g protein, 8.20 g fat, 23.9 g carbs, 70 mg sodium; allergens include wheat, soy & dairy.
8. アンパンマンビスケット Anpaman Biscuits – Easy to eat biscuits for babies 7+ months. 1 snack size package is 20.0 g, 71 kcal, 1.10 g protein, 2.00 g fat, 12.2 g carbs, 6. 0 mg sodium; allergens include wheat & dairy.
9. かっぱえびせん Kappa Ebi Sen crackers – These salty shrimp crackers are hard to stop eating. Marketed as good for 1+ year olds. 1 snack size package is 8.0 g, 32 kcal, 0.40 g protein, 0.10 g fat, 7.3 g carbs, 40 mg sodium; allergens include wheat, eggs, dairy & shrimp.
