Here are our January 19 – 20th, 2019 Tokyo Weekend Family Events and Activities. 1. Meguro Gajoen Hina Doll Exhibit – Meguro Gajoen’s celebration of Hinamatsuri dolls (雛祭り) is absolutely beautiful. Hinamatsuri (Girls’ Day) is celebrated at homes across Japan which has a daughter on March 3rd. Platforms covered with a red carpet are used to display a set of ornamental dolls (雛人形 hina-ningyō) representing the Emperor, Empress, attendants, and musicians in traditional court dress of the Heian period. Not only will the dolls impress you, but the rooms they are displayed in are very ornate. Learn about Girls’ Day and the art of Hinamatsuri Dolls this year.

2. Earth Garden Winter 2019 – The Earth Garden Craft Fair takes place four times a year. The earthy folk of Tokyo converge on Yoyogi Park to enjoy discovering eco products, organic foods and music. There are over 200 booths that will be displaying products and services to this eco and crafty group. Very fun, and impossible to walk way empty-handed. There is also a good music line-up to keep you dancing and warm. Kids will definitely enjoy participating in the baby and kids activities as well as wandering the stalls with parents.

3. Japanese Nabe Festival (Yokohama) –  Nabe (Japanese hot pot) is a staple in our family from November – February. If you have not figured out what your favorite nabe is then this event is a great chance to try nabe recipes from all over Japan. You can also enjoy sample over 100 kinds of Japanese sake from breweries nationwide. Warm up with Sake and Nabe this weekend!

4. Furusato Matsuri (Tokyo Dome, Bunkyo-ku) –  This event runs through January 20th. If you want to experience Japanese food from all around the country then the Furusato Matsuri is a good gourmet solution.  Prefectures from around Japan participate in the Furusato Matsuri serving their food, drink and local festivals to the hungry and curious public. The highlights are donburi from around Japan, local meats, seafood, sake and “Traditional Performances” (festivals assembled from all over Japan). Fun indoor weekend in January, but not good if you are on a diet.

Tokyo antique markets6. Antique Hunting:  There are five great markets this weekend; Yamato Antique Fair (Yamato, Kanagawa), Ryukoji Temple Antique Fair (Tatsunokuchi near Enoshima, Kanagawa Prefecture), O-Edo Antique Market (International Forum, Yurakucho), Takahata Fudo Antique Fair (Hino, Tokyo), and Hanazono Shrine Antique Fair (Shinjuku, Tokyo). Go Ice Skating (Various locations around Tokyo metro areas) – Looking for some fun and cool family entertainment in Tokyo, try ice skating.  Do you have wonderful memories of ice skating at the local pond or rink? Well, share those memories with your significant other, or kids at one of the Tokyo ice skating rinks. You can easily access one of the year-round rinks or one of the seasonal rinks that are now opening around the Tokyo area. Bundle up and hit the ice! Some great iceskating rinks for 2019.
