Kid friendly Izakayas with Play Spaces in Tokyo

Locating a dinner restaurant with a kids` space for little ones is a struggle. Welcome Monteroza, a kid-friendly izakaya chain with play spaces, a private room where parents can relax and dine while the little ones play. Monteroza kids` spaces are furnished with soft toys, books, music or video entertainment, colorful wall-padding and floors, a Rody bouncy horse, and in some locations an Anpanman slide.

The Monteroza Izakaya chain has about 500 shops of various names with kids` spaces in Japan; Yamauchi Nojo, Shirokiya, Uotami, to name a few. There are over 70 in Tokyo alone! We decided to visit the Yamauchi Nojo Izakaya in Jiyuugaoka with a couple friends for an early dinner.

Yamauchi Nojo is housed on the 5th floor of a building across from the Jiyugaoka Peacock Supermarket a short 3-min walk from Jiyugaoka Station. We were surprised when the elevator doors opened and revealed a brightly lit and spacious welcome area with wooden lockers to our right. We took off our shoes, placed them in the wooden lockers then followed the staff and the adorable footprint stickers on the floor to the back of the Izakaya.

When the staff opened the sliding doors our kids` eyes immediately lit up as they ran towards the toys and Anpanman slide. The toys, and the karaoke machine, kept them and their friends occupied the full two hours we were there. The space was perfect. Large enough to fit 4 adults and about 6 kids aged 0-6 years comfortably.

Yamauchi Nojo has a children`s menu which includes three different plates of rice, curry and fried foods (about 500 yen per set). Their bilingual food menu includes a variety of dishes to please all palates.

Reserve in advance. There is no additional charge for the “kids` space” however there is a table charge for adults (400 yen per adult). Fees and kids` spaces vary depending on the izakaya.
