Ikebukuro Life Safety Learning Center – Earthquake and Fire Simulator

If you have children ages 5 and up I recommend you attend the Ikebukuro Life and Safety Learning Center 池袋防災館.  Sign-up to take the FREE 1 hour 40 min tour and get a full education on the risk of fire, smoke, and earthquakes. The tour leaders are retired firemen and women who know their stuff and enjoy Ikebukuro Life Safety Learning Centereducating others on prevention and actions in case of fire and earthquakes. Our family thoroughly enjoyed it and will bring friends who are new to living in Japan to the Ikebukuro Life Ikebukuro Life Safety Learning CenterSafety Learning Center to be prepared.  In under two hours, you can be moved by a short fictional movie about an earthquake in present day Tokyo (English, Chinese and Korean subtitles are available), find your way through a smoky building, learn how to use fire extinguishers and experience a 7.0 magnitude earthquake simulator. A must visit for people who are living in Japan.

Planning your visit:Ikebukuro Life Safety Learning Center

  1. The tours all in Japanese, but you can still attend and learn without Japanese skills. The visuals and actions are very powerful. They do ask if you are a group of 10 or more to have a Japanese speaker with you for safety translation.
  2. To use the fire extinguisher children must be 10+ years. To be in the simulator children must be 3+ years (I think this is too young – it is very strong). I recommend wearing long pants – I got rug burn on the knees from the shaking.
  3. The basic tour takes 1 hour and 40 minutes.
  4. Basic Tour are 9:30-11:10, 13:00-14:40 and 15:00-16:40. (Last admission time is 16:15.)You need reservations so call and reserve your space. Very Basic English does work when calling – very basic. Show up 10 min early, or they may give your spot to another person.
  5. People who have knee or back problems,  are pregnant, or experience motion sickness should not join the earthquake simulator.
