Guide to Buying Your Child’s First Balance Bike in Japan

Buying a First Balance Bike for Your Child? Is your child ready for his or her first bicycle? Get your child riding confidently and safely with the right two-wheeler. There are a number of different features on balance bikes to consider; weight, size, tire type, and brakes. We listed the top 5 bikes foreign mothers purchased, where they purchased and why they love them.

Balance Bikes (Ages 2+)

Balance bikes allow active kids to have the look of a two-wheel bike without having to pedal. The benefit of a balance bike is that kids can learn to balance on it helping the transition to a big kid bicycle eliminating the need for training wheels.

Parents should look for a bike with a frame that will be light and manageable at a young age. An adjustable seat post and solid rubber tires are good bets to ensure the kid gets as much use out of the bike as possible. The bike should fit now, not grow into it later. If it is too small or too big, your child will have trouble controlling it.

Weight: Toddlers need a lightweight bike that they can get on and off of easily and by themselves. The bike should not weigh more than 30% of your child’s weight.

Frame: A seat height 1″ to 1.5″ less than your child’s inseam. The bike should have ample space between the seat and the handlebars

Tires: Foam tires are great for toddlers as they are lightweight and puncture proof. Air tires are best for kids aged 3+ years.

Brakes: Encourage your toddler to first stop with their feet then gradually start practicing using a hand brake. Many start practicing with a hand brake from age 3+ years.
