Genki Sushi (Shibuya, Tokyo) – Favorite Rotating Sushi for Tweens and Teens

When my out of town friends with elementary and teenage eater ask me for Tokyo sushi recommendations, I always recommend Genki Sushi in Shibuya. Why? Simple it is decent quality, great entertainment, and super value. We all love being able to order just what we want, plus the fun of using the touchpad, waiting anxiously for our sushi to arrive on the conveyor belt and then the stacking of the plate. So much fun! If you have big eaters like my teens, you will appreciate a sushi place where you can walk out full for about 2,00o yen for a big eater (about 20-25pieces of sushi, plus drink)  an 1,000 yen for not such a big eater (about 10-15 pieces with a drink).Genki Sushi, Rotating Sushi with kids, Tokyo sushi with kids

Genki Sushi is a chain in Japan, but they only have two stores in Tokyo,  the Shibuya shotengai location a fun place to visit for a few hours and shop. You can also visit the Shibuya Virtual Reality experience or have fun playing Glow Bowling. Of course, you will cross the Famous Shibuya Scramble when walking to Genki Sushi.

Each setting area has a screen (English is available) where you order what you want at your speed (the store does request you eat within 60 mins). Most sushi plates coating two sushi (nigiri) and cost 108 yen (100 yen plus 8% tax). Some seasonal and higher quality sushi can be as high as 194  yen per plate for 2, trios 345 yen and plates (usually four pieces) for 450 yen. You can see the sushi menu in English here.

Tips

1. Put your name on a waitlist as soon as you arrive. It may take 5-20 mins for space to open. Large groups take longer to sit if you want to sit together.

2. Genki sushi is tight inside so not stroller friendly, also do not take a lot of large bags because there is no place to store.

3. If your child can not sit on a stool alone, I would not take. Hard to enjoy sushi with a kid on your lap.

4. Order each plate as you eat. Do not order all at once or food comes to quickly.

5. Don’t take food off the conveyor belt unless your screen is announcing the arrival of the sushi you ordered.

6. Hot water is dispensed at the table/counter (be careful it is very hot). The green matcha is in another container and your mix to drink.Rotating Sushi for Tweens and Teens

7. Coldwater is self serve from a dispenser in the middle of the store.

8. You can order alcoholic beverages.

9. There is a selector of non-sushi foods such as french fries and fried chicken.

10. Some credit cards are accepted, although cash is preferred
