Enoshima Aquarium (Kanagawa)

Enoshima Aquarium (新江ノ島水族館) best living japanTook the kids to the Enoshima Aquarium (新江ノ島水族館) the other day and it was AWESOME! A great aquarium right on the beach with many indigenous fish from the Sagami Bay and the Pacific Ocean, great educational exhibitions, and touch pool.  IEnoshima Aquarium (新江ノ島水族館) best living japan can’t believe I have been in Japan for so many years and never have visited.  In one hour from Shinjuku or Tokyo train stations you can be transported to a beautiful beach and a great aquarium. I highly recommend you visit Enoshima Island and take a boat ride out to the caves.

The aquarium is split into 12 zones and takes between 2-4 hours to see and enjoy.  The zones include: 1. Sagami Bay Zone, 2. Deep Sea part 1, 3. Jelly Fish Fantasy Hall, 4. Pacific Ocean, 5. Research by his Majesty Akihito, 6. Jelly Fish Magic, 7. Penguins and Seals, 8. Deep Sea Part II, 9. Sea Turtle Beach, 10. Beach Experience Hall, 11. Dolphin Show Stadium and 12. Touch Pools. Our favourites were the Sagami Bay Zone, Penguins and Seals, Turtle Beach, Dolphin Show and Touch Pools.
Enoshima Aquarium (新江ノ島水族館) best living japanThe Enoshima Aquarium also has various shows each day to learn and enjoy! We enjoyed the Uogori show which Enoshima Aquarium (新江ノ島水族館) best living japanwas a scuba diver swimming around the massive Sagami Bay Tank. The show is in Japanese only, but cool to see the diver swimming amongst the fish. The diver gives an overview of the ecosystem and how the fish live. This show takes place twice a day for about 15-20 mins. We also saw the Penguin show and the Dolphin show which were very fun!
Most explanation boards at exhibits have titles and some sub-text in English, so you know the name of the fish you are viewing, but most details are only in Japanese. There is a cafe in the aquarium for lunch, and many barrier-free and child-friendly bathrooms so take your time and enjoy.
