Camping in Japan, Fujigo-ko

The Mount Fuji Five Lakes Area (Fujigo-ko) is a popular  spot for camping, boating, hiking, and numerous outdoor activities. There are plenty of accommodations in each of the five lakes areas; Yamanaka-ko, Kawaguchi-ko, Sai-ko, Shoji-ko, and Motosu-ko.

We made reservations at Saiko Pica Village, a popular camping site less than a two hour drive from Tokyo (a 30 min drive from Fuji Q Highland). The village is situated at Lake Sai, one of the five lakes around the Northern foot of Mount Fuji in Yamanashi, Japan. It offers powered sites for tents and motorhomes, various types of air-conditioned cottages, bicycle rentals, canoe & kayaking, as well as food, tent and camping set rentals for those who arrive empty handed. They also have a dog run as well as cottages with a gated outdoor area for pets!

The kids loved canoeing around the lake, fishing in the man-made rainbow trout pond, walking through the wilderness, BBQing and relaxing outdoors. It was a fun camping experience that everyone enjoyed.

Pica 3Notes:
– The village has a communal kitchen, bath and toilets (very clean). Only the Lake View Cottages are equip with a toilet.
– Only 2 garbage bags are distributed for each cabin. Keep your waste minimal.
– Park your car next to your cottage.
– Ask the front desk for bed linens.
– When you catch a fish at the Rainbow Trout pond do not throw it back. Cook the fish you catch.
– The neighbouring tent/cottages may be loud at night. If you have little ones carry a sound sleeper to drown out the noise so they can sleep.
– We were there two days one night. Three days two nights is ideal.
– Don`t forget the sunscreen, mosquito repellant and if you plan on canoeing life vests for the family!

Before heading home we stopped off in the Kawaguchiko area for a quick lunch. Lake Kawaguchi is a 10 min drive from Lake Sai and 15 min from Fuji Q Highland. It`s a much more developed area with small hotels, B&B`s, cafes, museums and shops. A friend recommended we stop by Cisco Coffee, a modern cafe with coffee beans from San Francisco. The meals were largely portioned and delicious!
