Botanical Garden FUREAI (Shibuya) – Kabuto Mushi Attraction (July 24 – Aug 12)

The Botanical Garden FUREAI in Shibuya is a small but well-run garden which offers gardening, nature, and arts & craft workshops for kids. It is a great place to see fireflies in the early summer (early June) and kabuto mushi ( カブトムシ  /  Japanese rhinoceros beetles) in July and Aug. If you child loves kabuto mushi than is a fantastic chance to walk into a cage with hundreds of beetles to watch them up close and hold them. Free for all kids elementary school age and below and Shibuya-ku residents; 100 JPY for all others.

From July 24 – Aug 12, 2018, visit the Botanical Garden to learn, watch and touch kabuto mushi. The volunteers will help you learn how to hold one safely (for the beetle’s safety) and about the beetles’ lifecycle. The beetle attraction is only open in the afternoons from 13:00 – 16:45; every 45 mins there is a 15 min break. Our kids loved it!

When the fireflies and beetles are not in season, you can come and roam the garden, play with some wooden blocks and read the Japanese kids books about nature. Almost every weekend there is a craft offered from making jewelry out of acorns to holiday wreaths out of pine cones. You can ask or a craft schedule at the front desk.  For adults, they have volunteer opportunities if you have a green thumb and some seminars on herbs and bonsai in Japanese (they also welcome non-Japanese speakers who want to learn).
