If your family consumes large amounts of fruits and veggies, you will want to shop at one of the five Bikuri Ya Fruit and Veggies (びっくり屋) shops in Azabu, Hiroo, Shirogane, and Mita. This five-store chain is located primarily in Minato-ku and is growing quickly because they offer great value and service. The store presentation is not fancy and a bit all over the place on the layout, however, I have found all the store workers to be very helpful. All the signs are in Japanese so if you are curious about the fruit or veggie and where it comes from (but do not read Japanese) you will need to ask. If you purchase over 5,000 yen of fruits and veggies by 16:00 you can have it delivered to your house for free that evening in the neighborhood. Bikuri Ya joins our favorite value and convenience shopping spots Hanamasa and Picard.

Some of the products are from overseas, but usually, there is a domestic offering as well. I have the prices to be about 10-20% lower than national Japanese supermarket prices and 10-40% discount vs. International supermarkets. Bikuri Ya Fruits and Veggies stores also carry a small selection of basic food items such as eggs, flour, soy sauce, and tofu.
