We took the kids to the beautiful Aqua World Oarai Aquarium in Ibaraki (アクアワールド茨城県大洗水族館). It was AWESOME! It’s one of the largest aquariums in Japan facing the Pacific Ocean and houses many indigenous fish, 60 types of sharks, great educational exhibitions, children’s corner, touch pool, and Sea Lion & Dolphin show.
The aquarium is split into 9 zones and takes between 2-4 hours to see and enjoy. The zones include: 1. Sea Life of Ibaraka 2. Deep See (Jellyfish Aquarium) 3. Seas of the World (Sharks & Sun fish), 4. Museum Zone, 5. Seas of the World (Tufted Puffins & Seals), 6. Kids Land (Touch Pool and playground), 7. Rivers & Streams, 8. Rendezvous Deck (special exhibitions & skeleton specimens), and 9. Oceanfront (Dolphin & Sea Lion Show). Our favourites were the Sea Life of Ibaraki (1,300 tons of water holds 20,000 fish), the Dolphin Show, Touch Pools, Penguins and Seals, Sharks and the children’s area. Visit our Instagram Feed for Videos!
There is a cafe in the aquarium for lunch, many rest areas and barrier-free and child-friendly bathrooms so take your time and enjoy.
We highly recommend coupling a visit to the Oarai Aquarium with the Hitachi Seaside Flower & Amusement Park, Ibaraki (17 minutes by car). Autumn is a great time to view the Red Kochia!
