With four kids and a dog I have a lot of people to thank this year. I think this 100 yen store craft – mikan wreath – is a healthy alternative to cookies and candies. Love the colours, and the fact that the mikans (clementines or tangerines) are in season now and available everywhere. The next two weeks I am going to feature a few easy “thank you gifts” 100 yen store crafts that you can pull together with just a few items from your local 100 yen store and supermarket. This mikan wreath project cost about 800 yen, but I still have plenty of ribbon and clear wrapping paper for other wreaths. Think I will make a few more for the neighbours. Give it a try. It’s easy and economical. Happy Holidays!!
How to make a Mikan Wreath – 100 yen store craft
Materials
1. Plastic wrapping paper (clear) – I could not find, so I bought large clear wrapping bags and cut open to make a clear sheet (note this project does not work well with kitchen plastic wrap, you need stiff wrapping paper plastic sheet)
2. Bag of mikans – you need 8 for this wreath
3. 1-2 rolls of wrapping ribbon
4. materials to make a thank you tag or card
5. scissors

Steps to make
Step 1. Cut a sheet of plastic wrapping paper about 80-100 cm X 20-30 cms. If your plastic wrap is not long enough than cut two pieces and overlap about 10 cms to allow it to act as one piece when rolled (you can see how I had to do this in the picture in step #2 below). Once you have laid out the plastic, line up 8 mikans with about 3-5 cms between each mikan. Spacing can be adjusted once you roll the plastic and tie the ribbon. Note: make sure mikans are all facing the same way; stem head-up or down (looks nice if they are all the same).
Step 2. Roll all eight mikans over and over in the plastic creating a long tube. Start at one end and tie a piece of ribbon securely between each mikan. The mikans should be secure but not squeezed or they will get damaged. Once you complete the 1st tie the remaining seven are very easy.
Step 3. As you are tying each ribbon between the mikans start to shape the plastic wrap and mikans to create the shape of a wreath. After you have tied all eight mikans securely in the tube tie the two ends together.
Step 4. Take the second colour ribbon and create a bigger bow. Take origami paper and create a tag. Attach the tag to ribbon and you are done! Give to someone to say “thank you”. A great winter gift.
