We love to watch our babies grow and explore their surroundings, but we don’t often realize what’s dangerous until they’ve gotten their little hands and months on something!
Baby proofing items are called itazura boushi guzzu (イタズラ防止グッズ) and you can find them at your local 100 yen shop, baby shops like Akachan Honpo, Nishi Matsuya, and Babies R Us, and online at Amazon Japan.
Be sure to check out Japan Parenting Groups and Resources, and don’t hesitate to ask other parents for recommendations or if they have a few extra items lying around at home.

10 Baby Proofing Items You Need In Your Japanese Home
Gate
Kicking off this list of must-haves is a gate. You might want two or three depending on the layout of your home, especially if you have stairs.
Considering that most Japanese homes, apartments, and condos have a genkan (lowered entrance way), a gate is a great way to prevent unexpected falls.
If you have the opportunity, visit a baby store so that you can physically test out the different varieties. Akachan Honpo has a great display corner for all their baby gates.
