Here are the recommended Tokyo family activities for the weekend of May 16 – 17, 2015. This weekend is a big festival weekend where you can enjoy Thai food and culture at the Thai Festival, enjoy art and design at the Design Festa, eat local at the Hiroo Tuna Festival, and experience Kagoshima culture and dance at the Ohara Festival in Shibuya. And lastly, if you have a child who LOVES reptiles, visit the Reptile World event. Five fun events that will not let you down! Venture out and be curious and creative!

Thai Festival 2015 BestLivingJapan#1. Thai Festival (Yoyogi/Harajuku) – This is one of the biggest and most popular festivals held in Yoyogi Park each year. If you love Thailand, Thai food, beverages, music, dancing and hospitality you will have a great time a this festival. Definitely one of my must attend festival. Say Yum!

Stoller and wheelchair friendly. You can also take your dog, but keep on a short leash.

 

#2. Design Festa Vol 41. (Big Sight, Ariake) — If you are into design and art, this is a great event to attend. The place Design Festa 41 BestLivingJapanis packed with people who live and eat design and art. You can just feel the creativity all around you. Attendees are a good mix of pro and amateurs. The events has vendor booths and exhibitions that cover everything from CG and 3D design to handmade crafts. There are also many booths focused on blogging and social media (Line, etc.). Great place to learn about the latest trends in design and art. If your elementary and older kids love art, please take them this weekend!

Access: 7 min walk from Kokusai-Tenjijo Station on the Rinkai Line; 3 min walk from Kokusai-Tenjijo-Seimon Station on the Yurikamome

Note: Parking available at BigSight for 250 yen per 30 mins. Strollers not advised due to crowds.

 

Hiroo Tuna Fair BestLivingJapan#3 Hiroo Tuna Fair (Hiroo, Shibuya-ku)  –  If you love tuna, or just want to have a fun 1-2 hours experiencing a great local fair visit the Hiroo Tuna Fair on Sunday. The entire shopping street is closed to car traffic from 13:00 – 16:00 and you can eat, drink, and even ride a mini steam train with your kids! This is a great local event. Good eats and fun!

 

 

#4. Shibuya Ohara Festival (Shibuya Dogenzaka, Shibuya-ku) – Every year in the Autumn, there is a two-day Shibuya De Ohara Festival  BestLivingJapanfestival in Kagoshima city which is celebrated. Since not all of us will have a chance to go to Kagoshima, the festival is borough tot Shibuya each May. This one day festival on Sunday takes over Shibuya area from the station up Dogenza. The highlight is the parade that begins at 12:50. A wonderful parade with dancing and music. Great Japan photo opportunity!  The festival runs from 10:00 so get their early and enjoy some Kyushu delicacies sold at food stations.  Great Sunday event if you are looking for something really Japanese!

Tokyo Reptiles World BestLivingJapan#5. Tokyo Reptiles World (Ikebukuro Sunshine City, Ikebukuro) – Do you have kids who love reptiles and small animals such as porcupines, turtles,  lizards and snakes? If yes, this event will be heaven for them. The concept of the Tokyo Reptiles World is to see, touch, learn and buy. There are over 120 booths that allow you to see, interact, ask questions and purchase. Be careful you might end up taking more than your kids home. So many cute reptiles to see.
