Tokyo Area Family Weekend Activities – July 4 and 5, 2015

Looks like it will be another rainy weekend in Tokyo again. Let’s all hope for some sunshine. However, rain or shine here are the Tokyo Area Family Weekend Activities recommendations for July 4 and 5, 2015.  Try making Teru Teru Bozu with your family to bring on the sun! Tanabata is this Tuesday, July 7th so many festivals to enjoy. We also have some great indoor play, see and learn locations. If you love the rain pull on your boots and head to a park to splash and enjoy the outdoors in the empty parks. Here are some of my favorites in the rain; Arisigawa Park, Setagaya Park and Saigoyama Park. If it does clear try attending one of the July Antique Markets. Enjoy the rain because in a few weeks we will be wishing it would rain!

Shitamachi Tan

1. Shitamachi Tanabata Festival, Asakusa (下町七夕まつり) – This festival is running from today until July 8th in the Kappabashi area of Asakusa. I love shopping in Kappabashi so a double bonus festival and shopping in one trip. The festival is on the main Kappabashi Hon-dori which is called “Kitchen Town” and is where chefs and food lovers shop for all their kitchen and cooking tools. The best time to visit the Shitamachi Tanabata Festival is Saturday and Sunday, July 4th and 5th. Over the weekend, the local businesses have special stalls with sales and food, and live music and parades take place.

2. Milky Way Firefly Festival 2015, Shirogane – Great intimate local festival in Shirogane, Minato-ku.  You can enjoy all the regular summer festival foods and games plus the big event of firefly watching from 19:00 – 21:00 Saturday night rain or shine! The fireflies are transported to Shirogane from Amanogawa so city folks can experience. Great family activity.

Wa no Akari x Hyakudan Kaidan 3. Wa no Akari x Hyakudan Kaidan, Meguro – If you have never visited Meguro’s Gajoen, this event is a good reason to go. From July 3rd – August 9th, you can see a light exhibit that shows some of Japan’s most famous summer festivals and imagery. My favourite parts of the exhibit are the masks from Aomori-ken,  and the 500 wind bells and the adorable goldfish paper lanterns.  A great place to visit in the rain. There are also some wonderful restaurants in the same building.

Aoyama Craft Beer Market @ The UN University Farmers Market, Omotesando/Aoyama – I love the weekend farmers market at the UN University in Aoyama for the in-season and organic produce.
