May 2017 Tokyo Top 10 Activities and Events

Here are our recommended May 2017 Tokyo Top 10 Activities and Events for families. May is a great time to clean out your closets, pick up some gently used items, help charities and enjoy the outdoor festivities. May 2017 Tokyo Top 10 Activities and Events

Weekend May 21 & 22, 2016, Yamathon1. Yamathon (around Tokyo) – The Tokyo Yamathon will take place Saturday, May 13th. If you haven`t joined a team you can still register. The closing date for (Peatix) registrations is on Friday 5th May 2017 at 18:00 (Japan time).  The Yamathon is a fundraising challenge where teams of three or four people compete to walk or run through Tokyo, visiting all 29 stations of the famous JR Yamanote train line in under 12 hours. The start and finish are at the Tokyo Tokia Building near Tokyo station. Start is 8:00. 100% of the teams registration fee goes to Plan International. Teams can take any course and any transport as long as they visit all 20 stations and have a picture of the entire team in front of each station.  I will definitely be visiting a few stations to cheer!  If you are interested in participating view Yamathon details here.

2. American Embassy Housing Compound Sidewalk Sale (Roppongi, Tokyo) – This annual sidewalk sale is a fun one-day event to shop for American goods which include used books, clothing, and household items. Great place to find a bargain. Open to the public but bring photo-IDs to enter. Since this event is at the American Embassy compound, there are some rules to attend. Please note:
・Only GREW GATE ENTRANCE will be opened.imgres
・All bags will be inspected when entering.
・Photo-ID required for admittance  (Children 12 and above should have photo ID).
・Please be considerate of our neighbors, strictly no parking!
・Illegally parked vehicles will be towed!
・No pets allowed. No smoking inside the compound.

3. Thai Festival (Yoyogi/Harajuku) – This is one of the biggest and most popular festivals held in Yoyogi Park each year. If you love Thailand, Thai food, beverages, music, dancing and hospitality you will have a great time a this festival. Definitely one of my must attend festival. Say Yum!

4. Nishimachi International School Flea Market (Moto Azabu, Minato-ku) — Nishimachi International School is holding their annual Nishimachi Community Service Flea Market on Saturday, May 13th. If you are looking for home items, kids clothing, toys or books, this is the place to shop. Some great end-of-school-year sale items! You can also enjoy a talent show by Nishimachi students and a delicious BBQ for all on the playground.

Tokyo American Club Women`s Group Nearly New Sale (Azabudai)  – The Tokyo American Clubs Women’s group is holding their annual Nearly New Sale on Tuesday, May 23, 2017. A great selection of adult and childrens` used clothes, baby items, toys, books, videos, household items and much more. Most of the products for sale are imported items, and sold by foreign Tokyo American Club members.

6. Sanpo in the Park 2017 (Setagaya Park) – Take your family and pet to the annual Sanpo in the Park charity walk organised by Animal Walk Tokyo! Sanpo in the Park has helped local charities raise over 2.5M yen.  That’s equivalent to more than 60,000 bowls of food!  This year’s walk is to support Heart Tokushima. Activities will include craft activities from the American School in Japan (ASIJ), a bake sale, and the walk around the park itself. Plus, the first 70 people to register on the day will receive a goody bag!

Event Date & Time: Sunday, May 21, 2017  11:00 – 14:00
Address: Setagaya Park By the fountains – look out for the AWT volunteers in bright blue t-shirts!
Cost: 1,500JPY per adult/1,000JPY per child (100% of these entry fees will go directly to Heart Tokushima)
Access: Setagaya Park is 15-20 minutes by foot from Ikejiri-Ohashi or Sangen-Jaya Stations on the Hanzomon/Denentoshi Line. Or, you can take one of the many buses from Shibuya Station and other locations which stop right outside the gate! From Shibuya Station, you can take the number 31, 32 or 34 bus straight to the park entrance (220 yen).

7. Okinawa Festival (Yoyogi/Harajuku) – Do you feel summer in the air? Get in the tropical spirit by attending the Okinawa Festival at Yoyogi Park this weekend. If you love great music, delicious food and want to learn more about Okinawa this is a good event for the family.  Definitely on my list for some late afternoon relaxation this weekend.

8. TELL Charity Walk and Run  (Tamagawa, Tokyo) – Run for a great cause, join the 18th edition of the TELL Charity Walk and Run on Saturday, May 27, 2017.  The Sound Mind, Sound Body Run & Walk will take place at the Tama River (Tamagawa) running course, and all proceeds from the event will support TELL and Second Harvest Japan, accredited not-for-profit organizations. This year`s event comprises a 10-kilometer run, 5-kilometer run, 5-kilometer walk, and 5-kilometer run for children, with prizes awarded to the fastest runners in the 10-kilometer and 5-kilometer runs, as well as to the top three girls and boys. In addition, the first 600 participants to check in on race morning will receive a Sound Mind, Sound Body Run & Walk gym towel.
TELL Charity Walk and Run Details
Date of event: Saturday, May 27th, 2017
Race times: 5k 10:00 am | 10k 10:30 am | walk 10:35 am

Cost: 3,500 JPY (adult), 2,500 JPY (6-12 yrs old).
Check in for race: Registration will take place at the Furuichiba Track and Field Stadium, accessible via Kashimada Station (Nambu line); Shin-Kawasaki Station (Yokosuka line); Yaguchinowatashi Station (Tokyu Tamagawa line). The event finishes at midday, and proceeds rain or shine.

9. Laos Festival 2017 (Yoyogi Park/Harajuku) – Visit the Laos Festival Saturday & Sunday, May 27 & 28, 2017 to learn about Laos culture, food and travel. I attended with the kids last year and we really enjoyed our first Laos cuisine and entertainment.  It is expected that over 150,000 people will attend the Laos Festival so be ready to party.

10. One Love Jamaican Festival (Odaiba) – What is the One Love Jamaica Festival!? The One Love Jamaica Festival is a yearly event held in Tokyo Japan which promotes the relationship between Jamaica and Japan. The festival explores the deep-rooted history in the Japanese’s love for Reggae music that originated in Jamaica. The festival includes food booths, live performances, and cultural booths among other activities. Enjoy some awesome music, food to queue for and summer drinks. A great family outing.
