5. Mt. Takao Hiwatari Festival (Hachioji, Tokyo) – Sunday, March 12th – from 13:00 – 17:00–  The fire-walking festival is an annual event held at Yakuoin Temple. Believers attend the festival to pray for the safety of their family. The yamabushi (Shugendo practicing monks) first walk barefoot over thimg_9140-200x133e sacred fire that is smoldering and still partially burning. It is quit exciting to see the chanting monks walk over the still burning embers. You can also walk barefoot once the fire has been put out. By the time the public can participate the path is warm but will not burn your feet. Remember to bring a wet towel to wash your feet when done.  The Yakuoin Temple is a short walk from the Takaosanguchi station.  I would recommend you also climb Mt. Takao and have a nice lunch for a great day!
