Here are our curated July 22 & 23, 2017 Tokyo weekend family events and activities for families in Japan.  Japanese schools are now officially out for summer break so attractions and events will be crowded the next seven weeks. Looks like it is going to be a clear and super hot weekend. Plan ahead and stay cool. This weekend the first big Tokyo fireworks will take place in Adachi-ku, and many new movies have just opened for the summer. 2. HandMade in Japan Fes 2017 (Ariake) (ハンドメイドインジャパンフェス) – If you are crafty, or just love to admire crafts you should attend HandMade in Japan Fes – also a great way to avoid the heat. Over 4,000 creators will present their works of art, music and food for view and purchase. Great place to source materials, learn new techniques and gain inspiration. There are over 30 workshops you can participate in to learn a new craft.  I love attending, and always walk away with enough project to keep me busy all year.

3. (Sorry not recommended !! Attended first thing Friday a.m. and all tickets for activities gone. Looks fun, but kids walk around disappointed.).  Natsu Yasumi 2017 Shukudai Jukenkyu Daisakusen  (Ariake) (夏休み 2017宿題* 自由研究自由研究大作戦)
 – The translation of this event is basically Summer Vacation 2017 Homework * Free Research Battle. Three days of free workshops for elementary school kinds to study different areas of science, math and language in a hands on environment. Experiments and learning, such as: about how our bodies process food, what it is like to work in a factory or how margarine is made. All of the events are in Japanese but the kids will still probably find the workshops interesting even if not everything is understood 100%. Some of the workshops have to be pre-registered (some are already full). Check out the website for more details. You also should register before attending the event on the website.

Fuurin Matsuri 20154. Fuurin Matsuri 2017, Nishiarai, Adachi-ku – A fuurinmeans wind chime in Japanese. Summer is a time when Japanese families place glass, metal and ceramic fuurins in their gardens to hear the beautiful ting-a-lings of summer breezes. At the Adachi Nishiarai Daishi temple fuurin craft people from across Japan set up booths to sell their creations. There are thousands of fuurin on display and the sound is amazing if the breeze is blowing. Highly recommend the beautify of sight and sound.

5. The 45th Mita Whole Town Noryo Carnival 2017 – A great local festival. The carnival is sponsored by the Mita Shotengai Promotion Association and Keio Naka Dori Shotenkai. You can enjoy a Brazilian samba parade, live music, food, drink and games.

  • Mary and the Witch’s Flower (Released July 8, 2017) – メアリと魔女の花 –  Meari to Majo no Hana) is a 2017 Japanese anime fantasy film directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi and produced by Studio Ponoc, based on The Little Broomstick by Mary Stewart.  The film tells a story of a young girl named Mary who discovers that she has a mysterious power to become a witch, which lasts for one night only. We recommend for children 8 and above.
  • Cars 3 (Released July 8, 2017) – (カーズ/クロスロード) Blindsided by a new generation of blazing-fast cars, the legendary Lighting McQueen finds Cars 3himself pushed out of the sport that he loves. Hoping to get back in the game, he turns to Cruz Ramirez, an eager young technician who has her own plans for winning. With inspiration from the Fabulous Hudson Hornet and a few unexpected turns, No. 95 prepares to compete on Piston Cup Racing’s biggest stage.

 

  • Soreike! Anpanman: Buruburu no Takarasagashi Daibouken! (Released July 8, 2017) – (それいけアンパンマン ブルブルの宝探し大冒険)  If your child loves Anpanman and understands Japanese this movie will be a hit. This is the 29th release for this series of Anpanma and will not let you down. Join the characters to find the treasure.

 

  • Despicable Me 3 ー(Released July 21, 2017) – (怪盗グルーのミニオン大脱走) – The mischievous Minions hope that Gru will return to a life of crime after the new boss of the Anti-Villain League fires him. Instead, Gru decides to remain retired and travel to Freedonia to meet his long-lost twin brother for the first time. The reunited siblings soon find themselves in an uneasy alliance to take down the elusive Balthazar Bratt, a former 1980s child star who seeks revenge against the world.
