Guide to Dog Food in Japan – Brands, Types, and Where to Buy
Dog food in Japan is sold as dry kibble, semi-moist kibble, and wet type, and is marketed towards a certain age group (puppy, adult, senior), dog breed, or dietary issue. As it can be difficult deciphering the ingredients, this guide will help you understand the Japanese labels and pick the paw-fect food for your furry friend.

Reading the label

When examining the ingredient list (原材料), check that the main ingredients (主原料) are meat (肉). Ideally, you’ll want to stay away from meat by-products (肉副産物) and meat meal and scraps (肉粉) as those are ingredients not fit for human consumption. As dogs are carnivores by nature, consider a product that doesn’t have soybeans (大豆) or corn (トウモロコシ) as the main ingredient. If a product does contain cereals (穀類), opt for whole grain (全粒粉) products over powdered (粉) and meal (ミール) ingredients.

Be on the lookout for additives (添加物). You may see 無添加 on a label, which means “no additives.” Additional additives are:

Antioxidants – 酸化防止剤
Artificial colors – 着色料
Artificial flavor – 甘味料
Coloring agents – 発色剤
Moisturizing agents – 保湿剤
Synthetic preservatives – 合成保存料

Country of origin – 原産地
USA – アメリカ合衆国・米国
China – 中国
Japan – 日本
France – フランス
Canada – カナダ
Netherlands オランダ

Date of expiration – 賞味期限
