I LOVE coffee, so I was thrilled to try Blue Bottle Coffee (ブルーボトルコーヒー). Blue Bottle Coffee launched their 1st Japan store in Fukugawa, Koto-ku on February 6th, 2015. Fukugawa is a great weekend outing since you can now combine great coffee with a visit to the Kiyosumi Garden and the Fukugawa-Edo Museum. Blue Bottle started in Oakland California in 2002 and now has coffee shops at locations on the East and West coasts of America. One of the main goals of the company is never to make coffee for roasted beans over 48 hours old – quality first. Japan is lucky to be the first country for their international expansion!

I enjoyed a delicious cappuccino and with a nice spicy molasses cookie! Most drinks are between 400-550 yen. It was also quite fun watching the staff make the coffee that is all manual. I waited 30 mins on a weekday; which is a really long time for me to wait. However, the smell of the roasting beans wafting from the warehouse caused me to suck it up and wait. Was it worth the wait? Yes. The Blue Bottle Coffee team is doing great job controlling the traffic. Once you have your coffee, there is space to sit or stand at a table since the number of people entering is so controlled. Also, there is no WIFI, so people are not camping out. I also purchased two bags of beans that I will enjoy this weekend!
Blue Bottle Coffee has set-up a very cool renovated warehouse that has a distinct vibe like you would find in Oakland or Brooklyn. The staff all very attractive, and decked out in their denim tops and knit caps. The shop on the 1st floor of the warehouse has seats and standing room for maybe 35-40 people max. The second floor of the warehouse houses the Blue Bottle Coffee office from where they will run the JP expansion. Blue Bottle Coffee is unique since they are handling all aspects of the business from the importing to the roasting of the beans. They truly see roasting beans and making coffee as an art. I think Japanese will embrace their precision and detail. The coffee is also darn good!
Blue Bottle Coffee’s Aoyama café will open March 7th, 2015 at 3 -13-14 Minami Aoyama, Minato-ku, Tōkyō right down the street from Omotesando crossing. I would recommend going to the Fukugawa store in March since all the people who want to wait an hour or more will be in Aoyama.
